William Michael Newell Obituary

Maritime Captain and retired Marine Corporal William Michael Newell “Captain Mike” (72) passed away suddenly on May 14, 2020. Preceded in death by his father, William Virgil “Bill’ Newell (Navy, U.S.S. Saratoga); Mother Vivian Joan Newell (Williams); and brother Gregory Stephen “Greg” Newell, Mike is survived by his wife, Marisa Ann Newell (Metz); stepmother Mary-Louis Newell; beloved service dog Mason; daughter Kimberley Joanne Sullivan (husband Tommy); Son William Thomas “Tom” Newell (wife Janel); daughter Stefanee Rebholz (husband Troy); grandchildren Chandler, Taylor, Kelton, Hunter, Emily, Griffin, Karter, Tristan, Ella, Parker, Preston, Jackson, and Mackensie; great-grandchild Russell; nephew Steven Newell (Wife Nita); and countless lifelong friends. Mike grew up from humble beginnings in Coshocton, Ohio. He voluntarily enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1965, missing his last quarter of high school and graduation to report to basic training. He served multiple tours of duty in Vietnam as a field radio operator, was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and was deemed 100% disabled from his combat wounds, but that never stopped Mike from living life to the fullest. One of Mike’s most proud personal moments came in 2016 when he finally received the high school diploma that he had earned in 1966. He was a life-long entrepreneur, building Kat Baloo’s Saloon (Coshocton, OH), McMickey’s Nightclub (Coshocton, OH) and managing numerous restaurants, golf courses and entertainment establishments. In 1995 Mike retired to pursue his life-long dream of becoming a fishing charter captain. He personally rebuilt three vessels, the “Big Deal, “Miss Marisa,” and “Vitamin Sea,” and fished them for over 15 years, winning many big-game tournaments and putting smiles on the faces of thousands of customers. Success followed Mike wherever he went. He loved his friends and family deeply, lived fearlessly, and never passed on a challenge. Celebrations of Mike’s life will take place in Pensacola, Florida and Coshocton, Ohio and he will be entered to the Earth with full military rights at future dates. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that those wishing to express their condolences make a humble contribution to the Gary Sinise Foundation or K-9’s for Warriors in Mike’s memory. It’s because of men and women like Mike, who dedicated their lives to serving our Nation and protecting it, that the United States of America is the greatest republic on Earth. Semper Fidelis.
