Malcolm George Johnston Obituary

Malcolm George Johnston, 94, of Methuen and former resident of Andover and Haverhill, passed away early Sunday, February 26, at Methuen Village. He was born in St. John, New Brunswick, Canada, on February 22, 1923, the second child of the late John George and Ethel (Coates) Johnston. Malcolm graduated from Reading (Massachusetts) High School in 1941 and enlisted in the Army Air Corps. In 1943 he married his high school sweetheart, Carolyn Lumsden, who died in 2012. Malcolm was posted to the US air-base at Levenham, England in 1944, where he served to the end of the war as radio operator and side gunner on a B-17 bomber that flew missions over Germany. After honorable discharge, he earned his Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from Northeastern University. He subsequently rose to leadership positions at Tyer Rubber in Andover and Bellofram in Burlington, MA. He enjoyed working in his garden, boating, fishing and operating a ham radio, and these interests, plus his growing family, filled his retirement years. Mr. Johnston was a member of the St. Matthew's Masonic Lodge of Andover, a member of the Vestry at Christ Church there, and a Boy Scout leader. Mr. Johnston is survived by his three sons (Malcolm Andrew and wife Christine of Clio, CA; Robert and wife Jan of Andover, MA; Gerald and wife Ann Marie of Haverhill); 7 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Grandson Matthew Johnston passed away in 2001. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the Funeral Service on Tuesday, March 7, at 11:00 AM, at Trinity Episcopal Church, 26 White St., in Haverhill. Interment will be private and at the convenience of his family. To share a memory or for more information, please visit www.farmerfuneralhomes.com
