Gloria L. Estvold Obituary

Gloria LaVonne Estvold, age 92, of Lakota, ND, passed away Wednesday, May 6, 2020 at the Good Samaritan Society in Lakota.

Gloria was born March 22, 1928, the daughter of Clarence and Bernice (Iverson) Sateren.  She was raised in rural Nelson County, spending many of her formative years living with her maternal grandparents.  Her mother passed away when she was eight years old.  Gloria and her sister moved back in with their father and brothers fulltime after Clarence was remarried to Lorraine Howen.  Gloria graduated with honors from Lakota High School in 1946.  For a couple years thereafter, she taught in a small country school in Nelson County.

Gloria met her future husband, Virgil “Bud” Estvold, while growing up and they were married on July 20, 1948 at Lakota Lutheran Church.  For the next four decades they made their life on their farm in Rubin Township, where she was constantly busy running her farm home and raising their three children: Charise, Lynn & Colette.

Gloria was known for her sewing ability and kept her children in clothes throughout their growing up years.  She used this love of sewing to create quilts which she gave on special events like high school graduations and weddings to her children, grandchildren, nephews, nieces, and others.  She also was an exceptional cook and specialized in Norwegian baked treats during the holidays.  During the years on the farm, Gloria was always busy, including personally painting their home and all of the farm buildings multiple times.

They moved into Lakota in 1992 after a disastrous fire took their farm home and all of its’ contents.  With the wonderful help of family, friends, and neighbors from Nelson County, they were able to get reestablished in their new home within a few short months.

Gloria worked as an aide at the Lakota Good Samaritan.  Later, she and a couple of friends volunteered weekly for many years to fix hair for women in the nursing home.

Gloria and Bud also were blessed to be very involved in raising their grandson, Troy Estvold.  They loved being involved in the lives of all six of their grandchildren.  Over the years, Gloria never forgot a birthday or special event for any of them.  When the grandkids were young, she liked to include little surprises in their cards.  Sometimes the surprise was only a stick of gum…but the kids knew it was sent with love!  The grandkids also got to share in another of Gloria and Bud’s enjoyable pursuits…camping!

Gloria was always very active in her church, serving on the church council, teaching the Bethel Series, working with the women of Lakota Lutheran church on multiple projects over the years including the sewing of literally hundreds of quilts that were given to those in need through the ELCA.

Gloria is survived by her daughter, Charise (David) Waind of Lake Metigoshe, ND; son, Lynn Estvold of rural Lakota; and daughter, Colette Riely (Steve Simmers) of Grand Forks, ND.  Also surviving are grandchildren, Benjamin (Sommer) Waind, Matthew (Melissa) Waind, Daniel (Haley) Waind, Troy Estvold, Nathan Riely, and Katie Riely (John Bennett); 15 great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Bernice Johnson and Mary Jane (Don) Pflaum; 2 brothers, Roger (Joan) Sateren and Lorne Sateren; and 3 sisters-in-law, Lorene Sateren, Grace Sateren, and Esther Estvold.

Gloria was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Estvold; parents; stepmother, Lorraine Sateren; and 2 brothers, Clifford Sateren and Burton Sateren.

Funeral services will be private, with burial in the Lakota Cemetery.

The family would like to thank the staff of Lakota Good Samaritan Society for their loving care and concern through the years.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Lakota Lutheran Church or Lakota Ambulance Service.

Sympathy cards and memorials may be mailed to Colette Riely 1607 – S. 20th Street, Grand Forks, ND 58201.
