Colonel (Ret) Beverly C. Snow, Jr., 93, former member of the South Carolina Coastal Zone Management Appellate Panel, died Sunday, November 6, 2016 at Franke at Seaside in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. Col. Snow was born in San Francisco, graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy, New Hampshire, and was commissioned in the Corps of Engineers in 1944 upon graduation from West Point. A veteran of World War II, he served as a Company Commander in the 129th Engineer Combat Battalion in the Philippines. In 1959, he was assigned to the Far East Engineer District in Seoul during the Korean conflict. Col. Snow was District Engineer for the Army Corps of Engineers at Wilmington, North Carolina from 1965 to 1968, a position held by his father Col. B. C. Snow from 1946 to 1948. His last military assignment was Chief Engineer for the U.S. Army in the Pacific, where he supervised construction, operation and maintenance of facilities in Hawaii, Vietnam, Thailand, Korea, Japan and Okinawa. During his Army career, Col. Snow was selected for a number of unusual assignments, including the Armed Forces Special Weapons Atomic Bomb Project at Sandia Base, New Mexico; British Army Engineer-in-Chief in London in an exchange program; coach of the only Army team ever to beat Navy on the General Electric “College Bowl” television program; and Commanding Officer of the 2nd Infantry Division 1st Brigade at Fort Benning, Georgia, a position normally held by an Infantry Officer. His decorations include two awards of the Legion of Merit and four awards of the Army Commendation Medal. He also received two Awards of Merit from the Society of American Military Engineers and a special award for wildlife conservation from the North Carolina Wildlife Federation. Retiring from military service in 1971, Col. Snow was Executive Director of the Coastal Plains Marine Center in Wilmington, NC, and after moving to Fripp Island, SC in 1981, a member of the South Carolina Coastal Council and its successor organization, the South Carolina Coastal Zone Management Appellate Panel. Surviving are his wife, Catherine Becker Snow of Wilmington, NC; his daughter, Nancy A. Snow of Raleigh, NC; his son, Edward B. Snow of Greenville, SC; and his granddaughter, Christine E. Snow of Columbia, SC. The family will announce details in December for a burial service at Oakdale Cemetery in Wilmington.
