Hazel Boylan Obituary

Hazel was born on Sept. 10, 1923 to Henry & Minnie (Kramer) Bell on her dad’s Portreeve homestead. She passed away peacefully at the age of 93 with family by her side on Friday April 28, 2017 in the Medicine Hat Regional hospital. 

Hazel is survived by her daughter Janet Sharpe of Yorkton, Sk., son Rodger (Marjorie) Boylan of Sceptre, Sk., daughter Gwen (Ed) Hammel of Glidden, Sk., daughter Patti (Carl) Jaindl of Wilkie, Sk., Sixteen grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren.  Sister Marmy Wagner of Regina, Sk., brother Fred Bell of Beiseker, Ab., sisters-in-law Francis Bell of Medicine Hat, Ab., Mina Anderson of Saskatoon, Sk., and Tillie Hagel of Lancer, Sk. Son-in-law Bob Sharpe of Fort Qu‘Appelle, Sk., and numerous nieces and nephews.

Hazel was predeceased by her parents and parents-in-law. Husband of over 70 years Roy, daughter Elaina Widdis, son-in-law Bruce Widdis, sister Erma Nitschke, brothers Bill Bell, and Hank Bell and two grandchildren.

Hazel was raised on the family farm north of Portreeve. She had many fond memories of working on the farm with her dad (who had nicknamed her Tadie). She was an avid softball player, known to her team mates as (Lefty). She was the pitcher for the Portreeve Pirettes. Roy and Hazel were married in 1941 and made their home in Portreeve, Sk. In Dec. of 1946 they moved to Sceptre where they resided and ran a business until Roy’s passing in 2011. Hazel moved to Medicine Hat in 2014.

Besides raising her 5 children Hazel was a lifetime member of the U.C.W. and also the Royal Purple where she held 17 of the 18 positions. She sold Avon for over 50 years and was also the bookkeeper for the farm & electrical business. She loved to spend time with her children and grandchildren, going on camping trips, playing many board games, gardening, going for walks and having coffee with her friends.  Family and friends were of utmost importance to Hazel.

A Funeral service was celebrated on May 3, 2017 at the Sceptre United Church officiated by Rev. Salesi Takau, pallbearers and honorary pallbearers were her grandsons and great grandsons.

We were all blessed to have her in our lives for so long.  We will miss her sense of humour but she will live on in our memories and also by the caring, selfless life she lived.
