Bernard John Nowicki

Bernard John Nowicki October 13, 1924 - January 29, 2017 South Bend - Bernard J. Nowicki, 92, passed away Sunday, January 29, 2017 at Memorial Hospital. Bernie was born October 13, 1924 in South Bend, to the late Bernice (Otolski) Nowicki. On April 19, 1947 Bernie married his loving wife Maryanne Nowicki, she preceded him in death in 2001. Bernie was also preceded in death by a son, Randy in 1956 and a brother, Stanley Nowicki in 2016. Survivors of Bernie include a daughter, Susan (Michael) Ceglarek; grandchildren, Brittany Ceglarek (Michael Marek), and Ryan Ceglarek, all of South Bend. Bernie was a parishioner of St. Hedwig Catholic Church where he was a member of the Golden Cluster, and the Holy Name Society. He was also a member St. Joseph Young Men’s Society, PNA #83 and Bowlers Country Club. Bernie enjoyed playing cards and golfing at Bowler’s Country Club and bowling at Eagles Club. He was an avid sports fan especially for Notre Dame and the Chicago Cubs; he enjoyed watching the 2016 World Series with his daughter, Sue. Bernie retired from the South Bend Community School Corporation after 29 years of service. He loved his job; everyone at school respected him for what he stood for. He truly was a role model for the kids and even the teachers at school. Bernie definitely knew what the definition of hard work was. He lived it every day and continued to do so in his retirement. Visitation for Bernie will be Wednesday, February 1, 2017 from 3:00pm to 7:00pm in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Rd. with a Rosary to be prayed at 4:30 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00am Thursday, February 2, 2017 in St. Hedwig Catholic Church. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery.
