Dorothea Payne Caskey Mangum entered the larger life on Saturday, January 28, 2017. Services will be 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 4 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be 5:00-7:00 p.m. Friday, February 3, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey. Dorothea was born in Athens, Ohio on June 25, 1932 to Sarah Edna Payne and John Homer Caskey. She earned a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Biology from Baylor University and a PhD in Biology from the University of Arizona in Tucson. Upon receiving her BS degree, Dorothea began her career teaching in several Texas high schools and the community college serving Midland and Odessa. She also taught in a school for military dependents in Wurzburg, Germany. She earned her PhD in marine biology and taught at Baylor University and was a tenured professor at Texas A & M University in Galveston, TX. Dorothea also did research for Dow Chemical in Lake Jackson, TX. On June 6, 1966, she married the Rev. Frank Burnett Mangum. In addition to her own profession, she was an active clergy wife and enjoyed planning menus for Meals on Wheels. Her teaching skills were also put to good use in Christian education. Dorothea owned and trained two Arabian horses, participating in many dressage and hunter-jumper competitions. She later owned a Welsh cob that became a national champion. Dorothea was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Martha Caskey Hunt; her brother, Dr. John H. Caskey; and her niece, Carla Susan Hunt. Survivors include her husband, Frank; her nephews, David Hunt of Waco, John Caskey of San Antonio, Robert and David Caskey of Flagstaff, AZ; and her nieces, Sarah Hunt Zenoble of Southlake, TX and Colleen Caskey of Flagstaff, AZ. Pallbearers will be Rollin Khoury, Dave DeGroot, Simon Buriss, Mercer Buchanan, Larry Lehr, Markham Dossett, Randy Schormann, and Floyd Jensen. Honorary pallbearers will be the St. Paul’s Men’s Prayer Breakfast Group. Memorial gifts may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 601 Columbus Ave. Waco, TX 76701 and to the Guardian Angel Fund at Baylor University, One Bear Place #97050, Waco, Texas 76798.
