Clarence Dempsey Oates Obituary

DURHAM: Clarence Dempsey Oates, 89, died Monday, January 30, 2017 at Peak Resources Treyburn. He was born in Durham, the son of the late Eugene and Maggie Oates. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Marion Kerr Oates, and son Joel D. Oates. Mr. Oates was a member of Rose of Sharon Baptist Church and was a retired Postal Letter Carrier. He had also served as the Administrator of The Odd Fellows Orphanage in Goldsboro NC prior to the closing of that institution. Mr. Oates spent his life giving to others and was a Boy Scout leader, a RA leader and Sunday School Teacher and helped many kids that he brought into his home from the Thomasville Orphanage during the holidays. His home was the place the neighborhood kids hung out and he welcomed all of his 5 boy’s friends with open arms. He was a true friend to all that knew him. He loved his home church of Holloway Street Baptist and served it in many capacities. Mr. Oates was an avid Church League Dart Ball player and helped start a team at Rose Of Sharon. Mr. Oates’s desire to serve his country led him to lied about his age so as to join the Navy to serve in WW2. After the Navy he finished high school at Durham High and later attended Durham Business College. Mr. Oates is survived by sons, David C. Oates (Mary Hawley), Timothy E Oates(Amy Blaug), Mark D. Oates, and Paul D. Oates; grandchildren, Jordan Carrsquillo (Ronnie), Justin, Craig, and Elizabeth Oates, Jenny Bradley (John) and Adrienne Oates; and great grandchildren, Gabriella and Alexander Carrasquillo. A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 4th at Rose of Sharon Baptist Church with Rev. Lealand Kerr and Rev. Jeff McCarthy officiating. The family will receive friends after the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Rose of Sharon Baptist Church, 4109 Guess Rd, Durham, NC 27712.
