Woodrow "Buddy" Williams, Jr. Obituary

Woodrow Leonard “Buddy” Williams, Jr., always a loving and devoted father and husband, died on Sunday, January 29, 2017, after a 5-month battle with lung cancer. He was pre-deceased by his wife of 49 years, Judy Williams, who died in 2015, of the same form of cancer. Buddy had two sons, Jody and Mark; and six grandchildren, Luke (21), Adam (16), Faith (14), Noah (14), Joshua (11), and Abigail (9). He enjoyed a special relationship with two daughters in law, Lisa Williams and Kitty Wade. Buddy was born on December 29, 1943, in Yanceyville, N.C. He was a graduate of George Washington High School and Danville Community College. Buddy spent two years in the U.S. Army stationed in Germany. After returning to the United States, Buddy spent the bulk of his career at the Danville Fire Department, working his way up from fire fighter to Fire Marshall by the time of his retirement in 2003. Buddy was the first Fire Marshall for the City of Danville after attending the Virginia Fire Marshall Academy. Buddy Williams provided a strong foundation which allowed his wife, Judy, to complete her education and advance in the Danville City School System. Always content to work behind the scenes, Buddy put in extraordinary effort into anything he was engaged in, whether volunteering at God’s Storehouse or helping one of his sons move into a new house. Buddy and Judy Williams enjoyed traveling around the globe, including trips to China and Peru and numerous trips to the islands of Hawaii. Up until the time of his illness, he was an active member of West Main Baptist Church. He was blessed with a loving family, including his sister, Carolyn Scearce, and brother-in-law, Robert Scearce, who spent many hours by his side in his final days. The visitation will be held on Tuesday evening, January 31, 2017, from 6 until 7 p.m. at Norris Funeral Home, 511 Church Avenue, Danville, VA 24541. The burial will take place at Danville Memorial Gardens Mausoleum on Wednesday, February 1, 2017, at 12 p.m. Norris Funeral Home West End is handling the funeral arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Danville Cancer Society.
