DURHAM: Merle Smith "Dub" Johnson, 96, died peacefully Sunday, January 29, 2017, at Duke Regional Hospital. Mr. Johnson was born in Durham on August 18, 1920, and was the son of the late John Henry and Maude Smith Johnson. Dub was a veteran of WWII having served with the US Army. A carpenter by trade, he spent many years working in the construction industry and later retired from the City of Durham as a Building Inspector. He was a longtime member of Bethany United Methodist Church, Durham Elks Lodge and the VFW Post 2740. Dub is predeceased by his wife of 72 years, Eva W. Johnson. He is survived by his daughter; Lynne J. Sprague and husband James; son, Jeffrey A. Johnson and wife Kate McNulty; and grandchildren, Justin A. Johnson and wife Jennifer, Chris J. Sprague, and Lindsay A. Sprague. A Service of Death and Resurrection will be held 1 p.m., Thursday, February 2nd at Bethany United Methodist Church with Rev. Julia Webb-Bowden officiating. Burial will follow at Maplewood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, February 1st at Clements Funeral Home in Durham. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions may be made to the Bethany UMC Building Fund, 2903 Guess Rd., Durham, NC 27705 or to Folds of Honor, c/o Hillandale Golf Course, Attn: Karl Kimball, 1600 Hillandale Rd, Durham, NC 27705.
