Roy Birard, 87, of Whitefield, N.H. passed away unexpectedly on Friday, July 12, 2019 at Weeks Medical Center.

He was born on June 10, 1932, in the former Morrison Hospital, in Whitefield, New Hampshire to Hubert and Alice Birard. Roy graduated in 1951 from the Whitefield High School and then went to work for A&P Stores. He was drafted into the US Army on February 3, 1953 and was sent to Indian Town Gap in Pennsylvania for training and onto Fort Knox, Kentucky to leadership school. He was deployed to Korea, with the US Army 197th Field Artillery, 3rd Division, where his tour of duty was 16 months long; he was promoted to Sergeant. In 1961, he was honorably discharged after 6 ½ years of inactive duty. He was the recipient of a letter from Kim Dae-Jung, then president of the Republic of Korea thanking him for his service.

In 1955 he married Dorothy Haynes and celebrated 63 years of marriage. Their children include: daughter Cheryl Killam and husband Jeffrey Killam of Concord, NH, daughter Debra Enman of Manchester, NH, son Kevin Birard and wife Eleanor of Jefferson, NH, son Jeffrey Birard and wife Michelle of Dalton, NH, and daughter Jennifer Birard of Tampa, Florida. He is also survived by three grandchildren: Lou-Ellen Enman daughter of Debra, Manchester, NH and Trevor and Brandon Birard sons of Kevin and Eleanor, Jefferson, NH, by two step-grandchildren: Jessica and Alyssa Mendez daughters of Michelle Birard of Dalton, NH and by two great grandchildren: Madyson and Jamison List, children of predeceased granddaughter Ashleigh List and Jason List of Concord, NH, he was also predeceased by his granddaughter Hilary Killam, daughter of Cheryl and Jeff Killam, and by his son-in-law Peter Enman, husband of Debra. He is survived by his sister Anita Merchant, of Salisbury, NH. He was predeceased in 2016 by his sister, Bernice Nigro of Somerville, MA, and in 2018 by his spouse Dorothy “Dot”.

He served as the chief caretaker and estate manager at the Longue Vue Farm in Whitefield. Roy was very active in the Mount Washington Grange as a Master Subordinate Grange Deputy, Pomona Grange Deputy, State Membership Director, and State Executive Committee Member. He was an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 10675. Roy was active in the town of Whitefield, serving 27 years as a volunteer fire fighter, selectman, and since 2016, served as the Town of Whitefield Cemetery Trustee. He also volunteered at the Morrison Nursing Home, assisting with various activities, including Bingo. He was also a devout Catholic.

A graveside memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 17, 2019 at 1:00 PM at the Park Street Cemetery in Whitefield, N.H.
