Barbara B. Sjoerdsma, age 84, of Grand Rapids, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, January 14, 2017, following a lengthy struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Her devotion to her family, her boundless hospitality, and her firm belief in God were key qualities in her life. Barb found great joy in raising her five children, Ron (Judi) Sjoerdsma, Gregg (Ann Dena) Sjoerdsma, Doug (Kate) Sjoerdsma, Joel (Lucrecia) Sjoerdsma, and Lisa (Brian) Vande Lune. She took delight in her thirteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Barb is survived by one brother, Henry G. (Ada) Bloem, two dear sisters who visited her faithfully, Hilda (John) DeVries and Lillian (Henry) Entingh, and her sister-in-law JoAnn (George) DeKoekkoek. She was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Ted; one son, Doug; one sister, June (Clare) Bolt; two brothers, Henry (Harriett) DeZeeuw and Harry J. (Rose) Bloem; and one sister-in-law Annaruth Brinks (VandenBerg). Relatives and friends can meet with the family on Saturday, January 28 at 10:00 AM at the Zaagman Memorial Chapel (2800 Burton St. SE) followed by a service of celebration at 11:00 AM. The family especially wishes to thank her caregivers from Faith Hospice and the staff of Arborview, Aldersgate, and Bristol at the Clark Retirement Community on Franklin. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Clark Foundation, Faith Hospice, or the national Alzheimer’s Association.
