Phyllis Anderson Wyman Pittsfield, Maine Obituary

Phyllis Anderson Wyman

Phyllis Anderson Wyman went home to be with her Lord Jesus Christ on January 14, 2017, following a long battle with Alzheimer’s. She was 88 years old. Phyllis was born in Stonington, Maine, on September 3, 1928. She was the daughter of Augustus Alexander and Mildred Joyce Anderson. Phyllis grew up on Deer Isle, attending public schools, including McKinley High School. In her junior year, she moved to Massachusetts, worked as a nanny and attended Milton Academy. She returned to graduate from McKinley High in 1946. While in high school, Phyllis was on the girls softball team, played trumpet in the band, and was voted the top female athlete. She graduated class Salutatorian. Phyllis married Jasper H. Wyman on August 10, 1946, in Bangor, Maine. Phyllis and Jasper lived on a farm in Prospect, Maine before moving to Connecticut in 1951. In addition to their own children, Jasper and Phyllis helped to raise several foster children. Phyllis was an accomplished seamstress and cook, and she loved being a mother and homemaker. Though she enjoyed domestic life, Phyllis was also a trailblazer. She ardently believed that every woman could be and do anything she wanted. Phyllis taught herself carpentry and auto-mechanics. She could be seen shingling a roof, working under the hood of a car, pouring cement, sheetrocking walls or driving a tractor. She enjoyed gardening. Phyllis also enjoyed hunting and fishing. She once bagged a deer that made the Biggest Bucks in Maine Club. While raising her family, she sold Worldbook encyclopedias, where her thirst for knowledge made her an enthusiastic proponent. Throughout her life, Phyllis was an avid amateur photographer, wi th a specialty for snapping pictures of a wide range of people, from noted Maine politicians to service station attendants. She almost always sent copies to her subjects. She came close to being seized by Secret Service agents when her camera's flashbulb accidentally discharged, falling near the feet of Secretary of State Edmund Muskie during a visit to Bangor. In 1980, Phyllis returned to school, earning an Associate degree in Political Science from the University of Maine in Augusta. Phyllis will be remembered not only as a loving wife and mother but as a fun-loving and energetic grandmother who enjoyed taking her grandchildren on a variety of both indoor and outdoor adventures. Although Phyllis suffered more than her share of tragedies in life, she maintained an indomitable spirit and joy-filled faith. Her relationship with Jesus Christ and her unshakable confidence in an almighty and loving God were both the anchors and touchstones of her long and extraordinary life. Phyllis taught Sunday school, worked in the church nursery and was passionately involved in Child Evangelism. She loved her Lord, her family and her church. An enthusiastic conversationalist with a genuine interest in all kinds of people, Phyllis’ warm smile brightened every occasion. She will be missed by all who had the joy of knowing her.
