Robert E. Cable Obituary

Robert E. Cable, age 80, of Stevens Point, retired Soo Line Railroad Engineer, died at his home Sunday night, January 15, 2017, under the care of his family, special caregiver, Inetta Posey, and Ministry Hospice after being diagnosed in early December with a brain tumor. Robert was born December 28, 1936, to Ward and Ethel (Harding) Cable in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, where he lived his entire life. He is a 1955 graduate of P.J. Jacobs High School. Following high school, he entered the U.S. Army and was stationed at five different Army bases stateside until receiving an honorable discharge in 1957. Following in his family footsteps, he hired on with the Soo Line Railroad in 1957 and retired as an engineer after nearly 40 years of service. His early rail trips took him to northwestern Wisconsin, and later, from Portage, Wisconsin, to the Twin Cities. Bob, together with his grandfather, Ira Cable, his father, Ward Cable, and brother, Bill Cable, completed 100 consecutive years of Cable family members working for the Soo Line Railroad. He married Lois R. Holubetz of Wausau, Wisconsin, at Immanuel Baptist Church on June 24, 1967. He took pride in his yard and large garden and enjoyed many summer days at Sunset Lake in Portage County and at Little Silver Lake in Wild Rose. He gauged whether or not it was a good summer by the number of trips he made to the lakes. He was a member of the Elks Club, the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers (BLE), and served many years on his Class of 1955 high school reunion committee. Over the years, the family took many trips through all 50 states. During their travels, they loved staying in touch with old friends and making new acquaintances wherever they went. After retirement, he and Lois enjoyed spending winters at South Padre Island, Texas, and Apache Junction, Arizona. During those travels, they sought out flea markets and antique shops where Bob loved “the thrill of the hunt”. Their interest in antiquing led to them starting their antique business, “Wezee’s Wonders”, in Wisconsin Dells, where they focused on railroad memorabilia and dairy collectibles. He took particular interest in Portage County history and his collection of local postcards. He often shared these historic gems with friends and with businesses that displayed them on their walls. Family time was very important to Bob especially time spent with his grandchildren. He also looked forward to his daily visits with his various “coffee gangs”. He is survived by his wife, Lois, of nearly 50 years; son Gregory (Angela) Cable, grandchildren, Justin and Alivia, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; daughter, Jennifer Cable (Mark Ponczoch, Sr.), granddaughter, Kathryn, and Mark’s older children, Mark Jr. and Baylee, of Stevens Point. He is further survived by a brother, Richard Cable of Eau Claire; sister, Judy Cable Anderson, Stevens Point; sister-in-law, Virginia (Fischer) Cable, Stevens Point; brother-in-law, Wayne Holubetz (Julie Ostendorf), Pewaukee; sister-in-law, Phyllis Holubetz, St. Cloud, Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his parents-in-law, Henry and Edna Holubetz; brother, William Cable; sister-in-Law, Marlene (Jensen) Cable; brother-in law, John Anderson; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Howard and Hilda Holubetz; brother-in-law, Darrell Holubetz; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Karl and Katie Holubetz; and nephews Gary Holubetz and Dennis Holubetz. Visitation will be held at Boston Funeral Home on Friday, January 20, 2017, from 4:00–8:00 p.m. and again on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service. A Funeral Service will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 21, 2017 at Boston Funeral Home with Pastor Doug Schneider officiating. Interment will be at McDill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the charity of your choice or to the “Friends of 2713 Engine”, in care of the Community Foundation of Central Wisconsin. The “Friends of 2713” is a non-profit group dedicated to the preservation of the railroad history of Stevens Point.
