Alex John VanEtten, age 24, passed away Sunday, January 15, 2017 at CMC – Pineville after a long battle with cancer. Alex was born in Rochester, NY on January 13, 1993, moved to Tega Cay in December, 1996 and graduated from Fort Mill High School in 2012. Survivors include his parents Gary and Beth VanEtten; brother Sean VanEtten; grandparents Helen VanEtten, and John and Margerie Harwood; as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins. Alex enjoyed reading, socializing with friends and loved ones, pursuing a career in law enforcement, and putting smiles on the face of whoever he encountered. He loved going to Holloway Bay Beach every summer in Fort Erie, Ontario, Canada. Family time was very important to Alex and he constantly expressed his love to everyone. During his first battle with cancer, Alex was able to meet with his favorite sports team, the Atlanta Falcons, through the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Alex maintained a relationship with a number of players and greatly appreciated the experience the extraordinary foundation gave to him. Memorial service will be held Thursday, January 19, 2017 at 2 pm at the Palmetto Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Barry Yates officiating. The family will have a reception following the service to receive family and friends.
