Mrs. Shirley Quay Smith Joiner of Batesville, MS passed away on Friday, May 8, 2020 at the age of 91. Mrs. Joiner was born May 13, 1928 in Panola County, MS to Myrtis Locke Smith and William H. “Pat” Smith. She was an educator for 32 years, teaching in Natchez and Batesville. Mrs. Joiner graduated Salutatorian of Courtland High School. She attended Northwest Junior College. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Education and her Master of Arts in teaching from the University of Mississippi, taught adult basic education and tutored non-readers for 3 years. Mrs. Joiner also volunteered as room mother for Batesville Elementary Kindergarten. Her honors include Batesville Civitan Teacher of the Year, South Panola Teacher’s Association Teacher of the Year, Art and Humanities institute Fellow for Memphis Academy of Art in 1964, and outstanding educator by the LACE organization. Mrs. Joiner was active in many professional organizations. She served as president of Panola County Teachers and as delegate to the state convention for 10 years and to the National Educators’ Association in 1980. As a 30-year member of Delta Kappa Gamma, she served as president of the local chapter, district committee chairperson, attended 10 state conventions, 2 Southeast regional conventions, 2 international conventions and was chosen as Woman of Distinction in 1991 and 1993. Mrs. Joiner was a member of the Midsouth and National Guillain-Barre Syndrome Support Groups and attended the first international symposium in Philadelphia in 1988. She was a member and past president of Gideons International Auxiliary Panola Camp. An avid traveler, Mrs. Joiner visited 47 states, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Mexico, and enjoyed an Amtrak trip with her sister-in-law, Bertha Foster. As a member of First Baptist Church, she taught the Willing Workers Sunday School Class for 30 years and was a member of Keenagers. She was a 30-year member and a 4 year group leader of Explorer’s Bible Study. She conducted seminars in local and district churches and at the Gulf Shores Baptist Assembly. Mrs. Joiner is survived by her son, Lin Joiner of Tupelo, MS; her brother, Billy Smith of Batesville, MS; 4 nieces; 2 nephews; her special friend Darcus Campbell; her many helpers through the years, including Loise Corley, Deloris Harris, Rosie Hughes and Lilly Bell Jones; and many friends and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd H. Joiner; her infant brother, Jack Smith; her infant sister, Sibyl Ann Smith; and her parents. A private graveside service will be held at Forest Memorial Cemetery in Batesville. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church in Batesville or Gideons International. Dickins Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
