Ruth Wilson Obituary

Ruth Marie Berhost Wilson, 85, of Haxtun passed away Sunday, January 15, 2017 in Haxtun at the Haxtun Hospital District. Visitation will be held Thursday, January 19th from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Tennant Funeral Home of Haxtun. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, January 20th at 2:30 p.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church with Father Bill Jungmann celebrating. Rosary will start at 2:00 p.m. before the Mass. Ruth was born to Bernard and Frances (Piel) Berhost on February 1, 1931 in Stoneham, Colorado and was the fifth of nine children. The family lived in the Stoneham area until she was 8 years old and then moved to the Sterling area where she attended grade school at Springdale and high school at Atwood and then graduated from Saint Anthony’s High School in 1949. After graduation while living in Sterling, Ruth met her future husband, William Burton Wilson and the two were married on February 28, 1954 at Saint Anthony’s Catholic Church in Sterling. Bill and Ruth were blessed with three daughters, Marilyn Jo (1954), Luann (Anna) (1956) and Sandra Rae (1960). Ruth was fortunate to be a stay-at-home wife and mother to raise the girls. In 1959, the family moved to Haxtun, Colorado where Bill worked at the Haxtun Cooperative Elevator. Ruth was an active member of Christ the King Catholic Church in Haxtun. She often volunteered by teaching CCD classes to the children, arranging funeral dinners and taking her turn to clean the church sanctuary. Ruth was very strong in her faith. Ruth continued to care for the family and on January 1, 1977, she began her life-long career with the new grocery store in town, Haxtun Supers. She worked there for 23 years total, 18 years as manager and 5 years as the bookkeeper. She was a part of the creation of the store, the expansion of the store and the building and moving of the newer, larger, more efficient store that still operates today. She found her calling as she loved working with the other employees and seeing the public every day. After her retirement in 1981, she volunteered with Happy Hands at the nursing home to wash and curl the residents’ hair. She enjoyed her time with them as they all had interesting and wonderful stories to tell. Ruth also volunteered her time to the Meet and Eat group, helping serve and deliver the food to the elder generation of Haxtun. Ruth loved working in her flower gardens. She had a gift and could make anything grow into a beautiful display. In later years it was a given that there would be two whiskey barrels at the driveway with beaming petunias cascading with beauty. She once said the secret is to talk to them. They needed her as much as she needed them. Another passion was Ruth’s love to read. She mentioned more than once that after finishing a book she would wonder for days what the different characters would be doing. It was her way of traveling and going on adventures. Ruth and her younger sister, Trish, did traveling on their own. They would get in a car or on a plane and see the New England states, Mount St Helen’s volcano and everything in between. The Berhost family was originally from Linn, MO so it was especially exciting to visit Sandy, who lived in Fayette, MO and drive to Linn to meet long-lost relatives, tour homes that were a part of the family and visit the cemetery where many relatives are buried. Ruth is survived by daughter Sandy (Joe) Ivy of Macon, MO, sisters Bernice Bettger of Arvada, Rosemary (Luther) Williams of Pueblo, and Patricia Berhost of Fort Collins. Son-in-laws, Mike Fink of Fort Collins and Bill Christianson of Hot Springs, SD. Grandchildren Chelsey and Robin Fink of Fort Collins, Pamela (Chris) Bryan of Cuba, MO, Dana Fehling of Fayette, MO, Josh Ivy (Shakeria) of Tulsa, OK and Jena Christianson of Overland Park, KS. Great-grandchildren, Carter and Jack Bryan, Easton Fehling, Ethan and Aiden Ivy. Special and loving people Tom and Corina Wilson and family plus many other nieces and nephews. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, parents, Bernard and Frances Berhost, two daughters, Marilyn Fink and Luann (Anna) Christianson, siblings, Paul Berhost, Bill Berhost, Leonard Berhost, Cornellia Neville and Barbara Heitte. Honorary Pallbearers are her living sisters, Bernice Bettger, Rosemary Williams and Patricia Berhost. Pallbearers are Tim Carper, Gary Carper, Max Fetzer and Brian Kroger. Memorials may be made in lieu of flowers to benefit Christ the King Catholic Church or the Haxtun Public Library c/o Tennant Funeral Home PO Box 486 Haxtun, CO 80731.
