Dorothy Comassar Obituary

Dorothy M. “Dottie” Comassar passed away peacefully at the age of 82, at Magnolia Springs in Loveland, OH. Dottie was born in Chesterton, Indiana on April 17, 1938 to Homer and Mary Ogborn. As a youth, her family moved often until finally settling in Morrow, Ohio during her high school years. The majority of her life was spent in the Cincinnati area where she lived and worked. After graduating from college with an engineering degree, Dottie began her career with the GE Aircraft Engines Group as an engineering assistant and was promoted to a management position six years later. From 1966-2001, she was the Manager, Manufacturing Technology Laboratory for GE Aircraft Engines where she managed over 160 engineers and technicians. She was a technical executive and general manager at a time when it was rare for a woman in GE and the aviation industry. In the late 1990s she was instrumental in the development and opening of the GE Marmara Tech Center, the first technical presence of GE Aviation in Turkey. The facility services GE engines used throughout Africa, Asia, and Europe. Of her achievements, she was most proud of the Marmara project for its contribution to the hiring of women engineers and its growth into a very large engineering presence in manufacturing, design, and materials support. Dottie believed in her people – she helped them develop their capabilities, hopes, goals, and built great teams in the process. Her people are her legacy. Throughout her working career, she served on several boards and was recognized for her community service efforts. In 1991, she was recognized by the YWCA of Cincinnati in their annual Women of Achievement Awards. In 2005, Dottie was the first and until 2019 only woman inducted into the GE Propulsion Hall of Fame. She also received the Neil H. McElroy Award for Resource Development Leadership for her role as one of the visionary leaders of United Way’s Women of Leadership initiative. Dottie’s energy, intelligence, tenacity, and passion was balanced by her humor and generosity. She was a long-term member of the Cincinnati Bridge Association and a NABC bridge master. A lover of the arts she enjoyed attending the Cincinnati Opera, Cincinnati Symphony and Pops, and shows at The Aronoff Center for the Arts. She enjoyed golfing, traveling and her trips to Hilton Head. Dottie was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Roland Ogborn, Charles Ogborn, sister Mary Wilder, her twin sister, Dolores Gutierrez, and her former husband of 35 years, Seymour Comassar. Survivors include her nieces Dawn Gutierrez (Ruell) Cayabyab, Nicci Gutierrez (Don) King, Deanna Wilder (Mike) Jones, Pam Wilder (Bruce) Harden, Connie Ogborn; her nephews, Kevin (Alma) Wilder and Jeffrey (Lisa) Wilder; and 10 great-nieces and nephews. No services are planned at this time. Donations can be made in her honor to United Way of Greater Cincinnati and YWCA Greater Cincinnati.
