Hortense "Tense" Gilbert, 93, of Hannibal, Missouri, passed away at 12:40 AM Sunday, January 15, 2017 at Beth Haven Nursing Home in Hannibal. Private Graveside Services and Burial will be at the Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Hannibal, MO. There will be no visitation The Family is being served by the James O'Donnell Funeral Home in Hannibal. Tense was born September 18, 1923, in Marion County, Mo to Emmett and Pauline Werner Yager. She was previously married to Emmett Stolte on September 18, 1947 and they had two children together; Terry and Debbie, they later divorced. She later married William "Bill" Gilbert on December 22, 1973 in Hannibal, MO. He preceded her in death December 8, 2006. Survivors include 2 children, Terry Stolte of Hannibal, MO and Debbie Bowen of Hannibal, MO, 2 grandchildren, Jesse Bowen and Brandi Stolte and 1 great grandchild, Cameron Bowen. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and 2 sisters, Agnes Thayer and Dorothy Gasko. Tense worked in the meat department at the former National Food Store in Hannibal as a meat wrapper for more than 28 years. Tense enjoyed baking and was known for the pies she made. She was a great cook and would cook for whomever came to visit. Tense was everyone's grandma, she had no enemies, and would do anything for anyone. She was a classy dresser and was known for her stylish and impeccable hair. Tense was a true lady. Her family and grandchildren were very special to her and she loved spending time with them. Tense and her deceased husband Bill, were very social and loved spending time together. She always had an open-door policy for friends of her children and grandchildren. Her home was known for wonderful food and snacks. In her retirement she enjoyed the outdoors. She also loved taking care of her dogs and cats. Tense was a good Christian woman with a heart of gold. She was a lifelong member of St. John's Lutheran Church. Memorial contributions may be made to Northeast Missouri Humane Society in care of the James O'Donnell Funeral Home.Obituary
