Mary Hilda Myers Edmonds, Washington Obituary

Mary Hilda Myers

Mary Hilda Ball was born January 7, 1929 in Kingston Upon Thames southwest of the city of London. She grew up in the neighboring town of Hampton Hill right on the river Thames. Her father Charles, mother Grace, brother Frank and sister Grace shared a good life. Mary enjoyed her days at school. Then in September 1939 life changed for the family. Britain declared war on Germany - World War II. Mary would often share memories of living through the London bombings. She and her friends would go to the local cinema as it was a good escape and she loved the Hollywood films especially the colorful musicals. When Mary left school she worked for several years at Bentalls department store in Kingston as a retail clerk in Women's fashions and the Toy department. In 1949 she met Thomas Myers a young handsome American from Norman Oklahoma who was stationed at a military base near the family home. They married and Tom received orders to transfer back to the states in 1951 to be stationed at Carswell Air Force base in Fort Worth Texas. At the time they could not travel together so Mary crossed the Atlantic by ship to join Tom in New York. In 1952 their son Tony was born. Tom was set on a career as a Meteorologist in the Air Force and the military family spent 40 years stationed at various military bases in the United States and England. While in England the family traveled through out the European countries. Mary loved discovering the great cities of Europe. In 1970 Tom retired from the Air Force and the family packed up and made the trek from Nebraska to the Northwest - including the family cat DC. Mary loved the area especially Edmonds. It reminded her of England - the gardens, climate and charm. Mary met gift shop owner Peggy Harris and Peggy offered her a position working in the shop Peggy Harris Gifts on Main Street Edmonds. Mary was to become a full time employee and she and Peggy worked closely together for 20 years. They became very close friends. Mary had a very strong Christian faith and in 1975 she and Tom became active members of Alderwood Manor Community Church. Mary liked working in the Church library, assisting with Vacation Bible school, Sunday School and Silver and Gold. In 1987 she and Tom with other members of the church under the direction of Pastor Wendt toured the Holy Land. She cherished her church family. Mary loved the arts. She enjoyed music especially the classics by Strauss, theater, opera and ballet. She was proud of her English heritage and would reminisce about her childhood days. Spring in England was a time that meant a lot to her. The blooming of daffodils she loved and would often recite her favorite poem by William Wordsworth - I Wandered Lonely As A Cloud - a host of golden daffodils. Like most English families part of the Christmas tradition was pausing to tune into the Queens annual Christmas message. She was proud of the Royal Family and what it represents. Mary was charming, loved by many and will be truly missed. She is survived by her husband Thomas, son Tony, sister in law Joan (Winchester England), niece Alison and family (Winchester England) and many family members in Oklahoma.
