Virginia Belle Hughes

Virginia Belle Hughes, 95, (8/30/1924 - 4/12/2020) died of the Covid-19 illness at The Cliffs at Eagle Rock Assisted Living Home in West Orange, NJ on Easter Sunday. Virginia Belle Hughes was born to Percy and Marguerite Clower of Dallas, TX.  She was the youngest of two girls.  She graduated from Baylor University in 1946.  In the 1950’s, she served as a missionary to Venezuela, where she met her future husband, Norman R. Hughes.  They were married Nov. 20, 1959 in Dallas TX.  They moved to northern New Jersey in the 60’s, and lived in Glen Ridge, and then in Bloomfield, until she moved to The Cliffs at Eagle Rock Assisted Living Home.   She worked at Schering-Plough as a Research Librarian until her retirement.  She was the Choir Director and Organist at First Baptist Church, Bloomfield, NJ for 37 years.  Virginia had a passion for Her Lord and Savior, and served him faithfully. She was a beloved Aunt, and the family always stayed with her whenever we visited the New York area.  She loved her music, even had an organ in her home, and used all her skills to praise the Lord.  She is survived by her sister, Ethel Louise Barnes, residing in San Jose, CA, and nephews and nieces: Tae Pun Barnes, Mountain Home, ID, Robert Barnes, Falling Waters, WV, Karen Colburn, University Place, WA, and Bruce Barnes, San Jose, CA.  They, their spouses and Virginia’s 9 grandnieces and grandnephews, and 4 great grandnephews and great grandnieces all have wonderful memories of her.   She will be laid to rest in Evergreen Cemetery, Hillside, NJ, in a closed ceremony at the Hughes Family plot beside her husband Norman (died May 20, 1970) and his mother Emma on May 6, 2020.   There will be a Celebration of Her Life ceremony at First Baptist Church, Bloomfield, NJ, during the summer/fall when conditions allow for social gatherings.   Memorials may be sent in her name to the Conservative Baptist Foreign Mission Society dba World Venture, 1501 West Mineral Ave., Littleton, CO 80120.
