Allen Bernard Linden Obituary

Needham, MA - Allen Bernard Linden, age 88, husband, father, grandfather, teacher, and friend extraordinaire, passed away on April 16, 2020 due to complications of dementia and COVID-19. Married to the love of his life, Adina, for 63 years, they traveled the world together using Durham, NH, their cherished home and community for almost 60 years, as their base. A professor of Far Eastern history at the University of New Hampshire for over 30 years, Al was a talented and devoted teacher to his students and, in 1980, was one of the inaugural recipients of the University’s Distinguished Teaching Award. Al grew up in Detroit, Michigan, the middle child of immigrant parents who ran a local grocery store. Through his involvement with the Zionist youth group Habonim, Al left Detroit to work and study in New York and to travel to the young state of Israel. It was also through Habonim that he met Adina. Al served in the U.S. Army in Korea, where he discovered his love of Far Eastern—and especially Chinese—history and culture, a passion that would lead to him becoming fluent in Chinese, his M.A. and Ph.D. from Columbia University and his long academic career. His commitment to Judaism and to the State of Israel never wavered; he and Adina were long-time members of Temple Israel of Portsmouth, NH, where Al served multiple terms on the Temple’s Board of Directors. Al is survived by his wife, Adina; his children: Jonathan and his wife Wendy, Annie and her husband Glen; his grandchildren: Josh, Matty, Shava and Moss; numerous nieces and nephews; and untold numbers of friends, students and other people whose lives he changed for the better. He will be sorely missed. Funeral services will be private due to the restrictions relating to COVID-19; the family plans to have a memorial service at a later date. Shiva plans will be provided by separate notice.
