Betty Ruth Brinson Douglas was Born October 3, 1945 in Swainsboro Georgia. She was number 15 of 17 children to Willie Mae and Jesse Brinson, both preceded her in death. She is survived by nine sisters and one brother along with a host of nieces and nephews.
She met Leon Carl Douglas on January 26th, 1976 but because of circumstances they were not able to marry until June 12, 1982. He is also one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. They both felt like they were “the one” that you meet and marry for a lifetime. They made their promise before Jehovah and all of the wedding party that they would remain faithful, love, honor, and cherish each other until death do they part. And they did so.
Although she was born in 1945 she says she did not really come alive until she was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses on December 4, 1971 in West Palm Beach Florida.
At 10 years of age a classmate introduced her to the truth and she studied out of The Good News of The Kingdom booklet. The seed was planted and she studied off and on for 14 years until her baptism in 1971. She was impressed with the hope of living forever on a paradise earth and knew that one day she was going to become one of Jehovah’s witnesses. Consequently, she never got involved in any other religion.
From an early age speaking was difficult because of having the speech impediment of stuttering. Because of that she was very concerned about commenting at the meetings; realizing that it was part of her worship. However, by becoming a diligent student of the Bible and relying on Jehovah she was able to overcome it and tried to comment at every meeting.
When she was given her first assignment on the theocratic Ministry school the brother told her that this was an assignment from Jehovah and she has never missed an assignment given her since then. A week before her death she managed to make it to the kingdom hall to give an experience in Oracle Arizona.
She was adamant about her Bible reading and so, when she can no longer read it, her husband sat with her and played the Bible reading for her every morning until she passed.
After her baptism in 1971 she became an auxiliary pioneer on and off for number of years until she became a full-time pioneer in September 1989 and continue to do so, for 30 years, until her death. After attending Pioneer school she was more determined to rely on Jehovah. So she began cutting back on her secular work and the more she did that, the more Jehovah did for her.
After 30 years of pioneering and just moments before her death she told her husband that Jehovah had taken better care of her than she had ever been able to take care of herself. And she knew that he would continue to do so until he resurrected her.
Jehovah gave her the privilege of preaching in seven different countries and serving in three different foreign language groups. She has accumulated literally hundreds of spiritual children that she either aided into the truth or help strengthen their conviction with the truth.
She was given the name “True Biz” by friends close to her in one sign language group. They called her that because she was so adamant about the truth. She always seem to steer car group conversations into spiritual conversations.
She told me as her husband, that her greatest joy came from conducting Bible studies and seeing the faces light up when they understood a biblical point. Those that knew her, knew her entire life revolved around the truth.
Although she had literally hundreds and hundreds of friends from all over the world, she wanted to make sure that special thanks was given to her spiritual sister and sometimes - although younger than she - her spiritual mother, Collette Haygood who took excellent care of her during her last and most critical days. She said the spiritual discussions after their Bible reading together was the highlight of her day. She often said that she expected to be rewarded in the New World but, through her friend Collette, Jehovah has rewarded her dearly in this old world.
She also made me promise to give recognition to her spiritual and fleshly sisters - Minnie Belle Sweeting and Teresa Alford and her brother William Brinson who also helped her financially through this very difficult time.
She had so many, many friends that it’s impossible to name them all but it would be a sin not to mention her dear friend Linda Waters in Statesboro Georgia. She had many friends in Dunnellon Florida, Northport Florida and Oracle Arizona. She had friends in various parts of the world and even in her passing she still Continues to get emails and texts.
Betty also made me, as her husband, promise that her friend, Deloris Chesteen, be thanked for sending her flowers EVERY DAY for over 15 months. They really made her face light up every time she saw them.
She never got into social media nor her husband. She once said that when just one of the governing body of Jehovah’s Witnesses signs up for social media then she will, so she nor her husband ever did.
She will be missed dearly by everyone who knew her and got the privilege of loving her. We look forward to the day when she - in the resurrection- will hear Jesus’ voice telling her to come out of the grave as he did Lazarus.
Her husband promised her before she passed that he would do everything possible to be there to greet her back, if Jehovah allows it.
Sleep in peace my dear wife, friend, sister and spiritual mother.
