Dr. Willie Jay Thompson Obituary

Affectionately known as “Jay”, Dr. Willie Jay Thompson was born December 3, 1938, the fourth child to Jonathan (Barber) and Tiolia Thompson. He attended Stuart Training School from first grade through high school graduation. During his high school years Dr. Thompson acquired a love for music and played the tuba in the STS marching band, under the direction and tutelage of Mr. James F. Robinson. Dr. Thompson enrolled at Florida A and M College (FAMC, now known as Florida A and M University or FAMU) as an elementary education major. He expanded his knowledge of music by learning to play the piano and learning choral music in the FAMC Collegiate Choir. While at university, Dr. Thompson was befriended by Dr. Beverly Barber who taught dance at the college, and that relationship undoubtedly helped him to learn how to produce his operarettas and other stage productions. He consulted with Dr. Barber until he retired from the Martin County school system. Dr. Thompson began his teaching career in Okeechobee, FL and was later hired in Indian Town, FL. All through out his teaching career, Dr. Thompson used his creative art talent to enhance the East Stuart Community as he introduced the citizens to history and the arts. He produced plays, operarettas, and formed community choirs as he tried to introduce everyone to the joy of music from every genre. He even occasionally played keyboard for Lloyd Jackson and the Rocketeers. He truly loved all forms of history, music and the arts. He always had a poem to fit the occasion. Two of his favorites were “It Couldn't Be Done” by Edgar Guest, and “Invictus” by William Ernest Henley. He will surely be missed by family and friends. But always of quick wit and a comedic personality, “Jay” would probably say at this point “Repeat after me, good bye. This has been a recording”. Dr. Thompson was preceded in death by his wife, Agnes Washington Thompson, his parents and six Siblings, Julia Mae, Merrinese, Homer, Sam, Tim, and Eleanor. He is survived by his son David Jonathan Thompson, Sr. Six Grand children (David Jonathan Thompson Jr.; Tai-Lah; Alyiah, Aiden, Jayden, and Jordan) and One Great Grand- Son Kaiden. One sister; Mozella Wilson. A “Multitude” of nephews, nieces, cousins, god-children, East 10th Neighbors, students around the world, Publix employees, Winn Dixie employees, and friends. In lieu of flowers, Scholarship in honor of Dr. Willie Jay Thompson. Zelle: DrJayWT2020@yahoo.com lashaunseay@gmail.com 334-332-5365
