Daniel E. Calabrese Obituary

Today, Sunday, April 05, 2020, the world is a little bit smaller as we say goodbye to Daniel E. Calabrese – age 95. Danny or Dan, as many called him was born on July 21, 1924, and was a long time resident of Mount Vernon, NY. He was the youngest of six siblings; Martha, Eleanor, Matilda (Tilly), Charlotte and Frank (Sonny) - all gone before Dan. He was the proud son of Frank Calabrese and Emily Liebelt, husband to Elaine, gone way too soon, and he is survived by his children Daniel and Cynthia, his grandchildren Jamie, Dana, Amanda and Jessica, and his great grandchildren, Zoey, Mason, and Jackson.

Daniel was an Army Veteran who proudly served his country during WWII from 1943 to 1946. Stationed in the Philippines, he was a radio operator and grew proficient at Morse code. He was awarded the American Service Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged from the Army on March 11, 1946.

After the war Danny began to work at Black & Decker. Hired in 1947 he was initially hired as a repairman. Dan progressed to shop manager, assistant service manager, and in 1959 was promoted to branch service manager of the Manhattan branch. Dan took over as major service center manager at Woodside in 1969. All told, he was with Black & Decker for 41 years, rarely missing a day’s work.

In retirement he was passionate about two things – golf and Amateur Radio. He excelled at both and was very active with the Yonkers Amateur Radio Club, often administering the license exam to young HAM Radio enthusiasts. Dan was also a self-taught electrician and all around handyman. All you had to do was ask for help and Dan was there with no hesitation.

We will all miss his calm and kind demeanor but we will remember him always.
