David Robert Smith, 87, of Granby, beloved husband for 65 years of Patricia (Rochford) Smith, passed away on Friday, March 20, 2020, at UConn Medical Center. Born in Torrington on May 23, 1932, son of the late Reynold Smith and Hilda (Hoffman) Boyle, he was raised in Winsted and was a graduate of Gilbert High School. After high school, David served in the US Air Force during the Korean War and upon his discharge he returned to Connecticut and took a position at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft as a draftsman. He returned to school at night at Western New England College where he received his Bachelors Degree in Engineering and his Masters Degree in Business. David retired from Pratt & Whitney as a chief draftsman after 36 years of service. He then followed his passion for education and children and took a position as a computer teaching assistant (TA) with the Granby Public Schools. He started at Kearns Primary School and later worked at Kelly Lane School until his retirement in 2018. In his spare time, David enjoyed spending time with his family, watching his favorite baseball team, the Boston Red Sox, and vacationing with his family in Cape Cod, MA. He was a longtime parishioner of St. Mary Church in Simsbury. Besides his wife, he leaves a son, David Michael Youngsmith and his wife Emy of San Francisco, CA; two daughters, Linda Jean Herrera of South Windsor and Jill Allison Pierson of West Simsbury; six grandchildren, Jessica Youngsmith and her husband Peter Fleming of San Francisco, CA, Nikolas Youngsmith of London, UK, Joel Anthony Herrera of South Windsor, Annaliese Lyn Herrera of Manchester, Luke Pierson and his wife Bethany of Holly Springs, NC, and Zachary Pierson of Granby; four great-grandchildren, Kayla and Owen Pierson, Georgia Youngsmith-Fleming, and Harper Grant; a brother, Bruce Boyle and his wife Judy of Winsted; and two sisters, Carole Morton of Treasure Island, FL and Nancy Chamberlin and her husband Alan of New Hampshire. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his stepfather, Paul Boyle; and a sister, Jean Tierney. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated on Saturday, August 8, 10 a.m., at St. Marys Church, 942 Hopmeadow St., Simsbury. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
