Fae Lavonne Lewis, age 93, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, March 20, 2020. Her faith in our Lord, Jesus, was strong, and she is now enjoying her reunion with loved ones that went before her. Fae Lavonne (Carter) Lewis was born September 2, 1926, the eldest child of Margaret Helen Elizabeth Martin and Herman Carter, in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. She attended country school through the eighth grade. She worked for various families in the Rothsay, Minnesota, area as a hired girl, doing cooking, cleaning, babysitting, and other chores. When she was young, times were hard, but she was able to add wit and humor when she spoke of her youth. On February 7,1945, Fae was united in marriage to Frank Walter Umhauer and had two children, Marguritte La Vonne and Anthony Loyd. She married Arthur William Lewis on March 23,1957. Shortly after they were married, they moved to New Brighton, Minnesota, where her two other children, Angela Rae and Valerie Jean were born. Art and Fae lived in New Brighton until moving to an acreage near Downing, Wisconsin, in 1992. After 39 years of marriage, Art passed away on June 17, 1996. Fae continued to live on the acreage until her passing. Many knew and remember Fae as an artist. She loved oil painting! She and Art spent many summers at the Art Colony in Grand Marais, Minnesota. If you ever visited Fae, you would see her paintings on display, and many of the frames were made by Art. She sold her original artwork and commissioned many pieces. Another of her loves were the mountains. Many vacations were spent at the Big Horns in Wyoming, camping in what we called a ‘prehistoric’ campground with no electricity or running water. She loved the quiet beauty and peacefulness of the mountains, and she often put mountain peaks in her paintings. For most of Fae’s life, she was a homemaker. She was an avid seamstress and made clothes for the family. She crocheted, knitted, cooked, baked, and canned. She even cut the kids’ hair. Just ask one of the girls about the Buster Brown or Pixie cuts!! She enjoyed reading, studying the Bible, bird watching (she participated in many bird counts with the American Audubon Society), fishing, and refinishing wood. Fae was always there for her children and others. She would talk, listen, and help however she could. She was very caring, loving, and generous, and made friends easily. You would see her wit, humor, and wisdom whenever you would visit with her. Almost everyone who met her immediately considered her their friend. She will be missed by so many. But those of us that know the Lord as Savior have the assurance of being with her again one day. Fae was preceded in death by her husband, Art; her parents Herman Carter and Margaret Ackert; her sister, Joyce Nord; her brother, Darrell Ackert; one grandson, Ethan; and one great granddaughter, Norah. She is survived by four children: Marguritte (Bill) Paulsen, Tony Lewis, Angie (Steve) Romick, and Valerie (Grady) Jensen; ten grandchildren, and fourteen great grandchildren. Services are pending and will be held at a later date.
