Hazel Elaine Ewing Smith Obituary

Hazel Elaine Ewing Smith, age 90, from Monroe Oregon passed away on March 20th, 2020 in Sandy Oregon. Elaine was born on September 20th, 1929 in Idaho. While attending Northwest Christian College in Oregon she met and married Mont W. Smith in 1950. Mont predeceased her in 2007. Also preceding her in death were her parents Ray and Hazel Ewing, as well as her three brothers, Raymond, Royal and Terrance Ewing. Elaine lived an interesting and full life. She and Mont brought into their family of five another three girls, and took in three of her nieces as well. In 1962 Elaine and Mont took five of their children with them when they went to serve as missionaries in Ethiopia, Africa. They began a mission in the highlands of Ethiopia, bringing scripture, medicine and schooling to the Oromo tribe. They served in Africa over a period of seven years, returning to the states in 1969. Elaine returned to college in the early 70’s and earned a teaching degree while still maintaining her active role as a preacher’s spouse and helpmeet. She taught elementary school in both Oregon and California before returning to school to earn a doctorate in Psychology. Elaine practiced psychology in California before opening her own practice in Washington State. Eventually, she and Mont retired to their rural property in Oregon in the 1990’s. Elaine is survived by her children Laura Landgraf and her spouse John; Kathy Adams and her spouse Don; Montwayne Smith and his spouse Laura; and Hallie Whinnery and her spouse Brent. Her daughter Ellen Clendenen predeceased her. Elaine is also survived by a healthy brood of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at a future date.
