Obituary

Wilfred John Quigley was born in Toronto in 1927 the middle child of seven. He was the oldest
boy to stay home during WW2 and he took that responsibility very seriously. He went on to
have seven kids of his own with the love of his life, Mary Margaret Plunkett. He was an eternal
prankster and a practical joker with a twinkle in his eye and a song in his heart.

Wilf spent many years at Canada Post working his way up from a night sorter in the early years
to PostMaster of Port Hope in 1973–resulting in a move to Port Hope, Ontario. He never looked
back. He found a strong community through his volunteer work but also with his fellow
postmasters in the region.

He & Mary were very active community volunteers in Scouting & the Rotary Club throughout
those years. Wilf was the Co-Chair of the Fundraising Committee for the 1980 Port Hope Flood
& successfully secured enough funding to cover all needs of the community in its aftermath.
Wilf & Mary were avid campers and they crisscrossed Canada every summer with the kids in
tow. Our lives were truly enriched through those crazy adventures.

After retiring from Canada Post, Wilf embarked on a second career in real estate and because it
fulfilled his love of meeting & helping people he flourished in it. It also gave him & Mary the
freedom to travel south in winter where they settled in with a new group of friends in SW
Florida.

In their later years, Wilf & Mary came to rely upon Personal Support Workers for help around
the house. After Mary died in 2007, Wilf decided to move into retirement living and then later
into assisted living at Empire Crossing in Port Hope. He was always treated with love & respect.
The PSWS in particular were so kind, caring & thoughtful and we cannot thank them enough.
Wilf died peacefully at Northumberland Hills Hospital on March 20, 2020 at the age of 92 after
a long life, well lived. He was predeceased by his beloved Mary Margaret (Plunkett) Quigley. He
was the loving father of Susan (Peter Barclay), Marie (David Lytle) Patricia, Joan (Patrick
Semple), Aggie (Walter Tose), Wilf (Kim) and Rob (Gurpreet Kaur Sodhi). Dear Grandfather of
Edward (Melanie), James (Amber), Jennifer (Brad), Jaclyn (Kevin), Sara (Stuart), Kelly, Terry,
Andrew (Adelle), Patrick, Christian and Gaia. Adoring Great-Grandfather of Megan, Taylor,
Nicholas, Presley, Joshua, Keira, Jenna, Katelyn, Tyler, Zoe, Emma, Jaxen, Anson, Cliff, Jack,
Logan, Xander and Sophia . And Great-Great-Grandfather of Ellie. He is also survived by his
sister Kay Roy and sister-in-law Zeta Quigley and many, many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A private Memorial Mass will take place on September 25th at 10AM. We will create a Zoom
connection for those who may wish to join us virtually. The Interment will follow immediately
afterward. A Celebration of Life has been postponed until Covid restrictions are downgraded
sufficiently to warrant a large get-together.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to a bursary we’ve set up at Fleming College for
PSWs with financial need. The Wilfred & Mary Margaret Bursary for Personal Support Worker
(PSW). It was established to provide financial assistance to a full time PSW student residing in
Port Hope. A small token of appreciation for the PSWs that came before them. For care above &
beyond, for nurturing that practical joker and nourishing his endearing twinkle.
