Frederick, MD - Dorothy L. Norris passed away quietly and is now at peace on March 20, 2020.  Dorothy was born on October 22, 1914, in Little Orleans, MD, to the late Archibald R. Shafer and Edith H (Sauerwein) Shafer. She was predeceased by her husband, Adolph Norris, in 2008 after 72 years of marriage. She was also predeceased by four sisters and four brothers. Dorothy is survived by two sons, Larry E. Norris and wife Carol Lynne of Venice, FL, and David R. Norris and wife, Brenda Jean, Venice, FL. . Her grandchildren are Robin Brown, Kimberly Harrington, Kimberly Keldorfer, and Erik Norris. Dorothy has six great grandchildren, three great, great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.  Mrs. Norris was a 66-year member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, sang in the choir and served as the assistant organist for many years. She was a past president of the Women’s Society of Christian Service (WSCS). In the early 60s, she and her husband formed Petroleum Equipment Service, Inc., where she served as Secretary/Treasurer for a number of years until her retirement. She was an avid baker whose cinnamon buns were renowned among family members and friends.  Dorothy has been a resident of the Country Meadows retirement community in Frederick, MD, since 2009, where she participated in a number of activities, including painting and knitting caps for use by military service personnel, cancer patients and premature infants.   Dorothy learned to paint in her 50s through continuing education courses and won several awards in art shows. One of her paintings was chosen as the corporate Christmas card for Country Meadows in 2017 when she was 103 years old. At the urging of others, she entered an art show at the Delaplaine Art Center, and her painting was selected as the Delaplaine’s 2016 Christmas card picture. On her 103rd birthday, Country Meadows surprised her with a photograph book of her paintings.  Dorothy became a self-taught woman who believed in higher education. She funded an engineering scholarship in memory of her husband at Frostburg State University, and her interest in art led to the funding of an art scholarship in her name at FSU in 2019.  Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
