Mrs. Hazel Modean (Henderson) Suthrlen, resident of Cherry Valley, Arkansas, departed this life on Friday, March 20, 2020, at St. Bernard’s Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro at the age of 86. Hazel was born in Scott Township in Poinsett County, Arkansas on Saturday, September 16, 1933, the daughter of Mr. Walter Henderson and Mrs. Essie (Clements) Henderson. Early in Hazel’s life she worked in farming, before going to work at Addison Shoe Corporation and Sanyo Manufacturing Company. She also worked as a personal caregiver. Hazel and Mr. Earnest Howard Suthrlen were united in marriage on September 25, 1947, and they cherished nearly 67 years together prior to Mr. Suthrlen’s passing in 2014. Hazel was of the Church of God faith, and attended the Cherry Valley Church of God whenever she could. She enjoyed gardening and being outdoors. Her greatest joy was being with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Mrs. Suthrlen was preceded in death by her husband, Earnest Suthrlen; parents, Walter and Essie Henderson; a brother, Carl Henderson; an infant daughter; two grandchildren, Jennifer Suthrlen and C.J. Costner; and a great-great-grandchild, Sydney Grace Van. She is survived by two sons, Howard Suthrlen and wife, Glenda, of Wynne; and Ricky Suthrlen and wife, Bobbie, of Vanndale; five daughters, Jeraldine Wessner and husband, Tommy, of Rockford, Illinois; Ernestine Murphy and husband, Dennis, of Mountain View; Greta Costner of Forrest City; Pamela Pike of Jonesboro; and Elizabeth Coats and husband, Terry, of Cherry Valley; a brother, R.L. Henderson of Newark; two sisters, Wyvonna Joilet of Memphis, Tennessee and Patricia Burnett of Wynne; 17 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be private with interment in Tyer Cemetery near Cherry Valley.
