Landen Gwen Cox Obituary

Landen Gwen Cox, 21, of Grass Range, MT, went to be with Jesus March 18, 2020 as a result of a car accident. She lived her life full of vitality, independence and a love for all around her.            Landen was born in Great Falls, MT June 1, 1998. From near birth, she exhibited significant, memorable qualities that would forever leave a permanent brand on the hearts of anyone who met her. A free spirit, she was the family comedian with a giant smile and funny faces, earning the nickname “Pete” by her parents. Landen and her older brother, Lance, were born 21 months apart and were inseparable when they were little. In this past year they were beginning to build a new friendship as adults, as so many siblings do.            It was Landen's deep draw to horses that fueled a life of raising, training, showing and loving horses. Her gifted hands and seat were handed down from her grandpa Cox, whom she rode with often. She displayed fearlessness over fences (her special love), to cutting, to trailing cows, to training colts. Most recently she added a buckle to her collection at the Missouri River Horse Challenge. She had every intention to create a life in the reined cow horse industry.            As a 10-year 4-H member, Landen began showing sheep and cattle in her first membership years. Sheep were as irresistible to her as her horses and she was as talented raising and showing lambs as she was riding. By the time she reached her teen years, there were not many showmanship classes she didn't place in the top three, earning many grand championships. She was fiercely competitive, and loved learning how she could improve her skills, traveling as far as Utah to compete nationally.            Perhaps most importantly, horses led her to eternal friendships, especially lifelong friend Faith Stevenson of Hobson, MT. Everything in her world was consumed by horses, from her first pony, Ike, to special standouts, Roxie and Playboy. Horse shows and clinics took her, Faith and friends to all parts of the state with Landen's typical comic routine and energy coming along for the ride.            Landen was surrounded by family and friends who will miss her desperately. Those who knew her intimately knew that she loved Jesus. She studied her Bible and had many, many conversations about her faith with her mom, just beginning her Christian walk. While that side of her was sometimes contradictory to her wild, infectious spirit, it perhaps was the very reason her beloved soul was so needed in Heaven.            “Pete's” family forever are Lonnie Cox (father) and Julie (Dengel) Cox of Grass Range, MT; Lori (Valentine) Cox (mother) of Grand Island, NE; and Lance Cox (brother) of Grass Range, MT; and immediate family: Reagann (Dengel), Chance and Hazel Wilson of Scobey, MT; Keith, Sean and Dylan Valentine of Kalispell, MT; Linda (Cox), Tom, Josh and Pat Barnett of Billings, MT; Tami (Cox), Greg, Walter and Randi Wichman of Hilger, MT; Carla (Cox) Dan, Jessica and Danielle Horan of Moore, MT; Barb Valentine of Great Falls, MT; and Dale and Maria Cox of Grass Range, MT. She is preceded in death by her grandmothers, Shirley Cox and Gwen Valentine; and grandfather, Lonny Valentine. Inscribed on Landen's left arm was Romans 8:18: “I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.”  Her celebration of life was held Monday, March 23 at 2 p.m., outdoors as she would want it, at Frank Day Park, Lewistown, MT. In lieu of flowers, the family has established a Landen Cox Memorial at the Fergus Federal Credit Union. It will be used to honor her through an annual award in senior sheep showmanship and an equine colt class at Central Montana Fair.  Creel Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.
