Garnet W. Stephens ,87, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on December 12, 2016. She was born in Parkersburg to Fritz and Marie Wilhelm. She had one brother, George, who preceded her in death. In 1949, she married James L. Stephens and they had three children, Jane Auge’ (Roger) of Covington, KY; Ann Baker (Charlie) of Dallas, TX; and Sarah Beard (Robert) of Marietta. There are six grandchildren and one great-grandson. Garnet led a full and productive life in our community. She was an active member of St Luke’s Lutheran Church, where she sang in the choir for many years. After her retirement from Family Health Services, she was instrumental in the formation of Caring Connection and was its first director. Garnet was a sustaining member of the Marietta Welfare League, a member of the Betsy Bookers, The League of Women Voters, P.E.O., Kiwanis, and T(cq)he Original Marietta Bridge Club. In 1993, she was named Zonta’s Woman of the Year and in 1998 she was Citizen of the Year by the Civitan Club. A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family.The family of Garnet W. Stephens hopes that you will join them during a musical celebration of her life, Saturday, March 18th at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Marietta. Prelude music will begin at 1:30 pm with service to begin at 2:00 pm. A reception will follow the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggestions donations to Caring Connection , 411 Scammel Street, Marietta, OH 45750 or Marietta Amedisys(cq) Hospice.
