David James Phelps, 77 of Chesaning, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 7, 2020, at his home from congestive heart failure with his family by his side. Dave was born on November 26, 1942, in Saginaw, MI, son of the late Milton and Florence (Tuck) Phelps. He graduated from St. Charles High School in 1960. He married Karen Blehm on June 19, 1965. Dave worked at Fisher Body and Buick City in Flint until he retired in 1993. Dave loved to hunt, fish, and rugged camping in Canada on remote islands. He also enjoyed visiting friends and family, especially at the annual family reunions. In years past, he rode his bicycle over 2000 miles per summer hunting for cans. He also grew a large vegetable garden for many years. Dave is survived by two sons: David Todd (Katy) Phelps of Paris; Kelly Robert Phelps of Rogers City; sister, Rose Shook of Valdosta, GA; sister-in-law, Delores Phelps of Chesaning; brother-in-law, Dwight Thurston of Clare; two cousins: Shirley Craig of Saginaw; Arlene Tuck of Essexville. Also surviving are a former spouse, Karen Phelps of Chesaning; many nieces; nephews; great friends; and his four cats: Smokey, Blacky, Sweet Pea, and Wildcat. Dave was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Milton and Duane; two sisters: Agnace Peterson; and Elinor Thurston; two brothers-in-law: Jack Shook and Bob Peterson. If you judge a man by the quality of his friends and family, Dave was the richest man in the world. Dave’s memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 11, 2020, at the W. L. Case and Company Funeral Chapel, 201 N. Miller Road. Rev. Rob Richards will officiate. Honoring Dave’s wishes cremation has taken place. Friends are welcome to visit with the family at the funeral chapel on Tuesday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service.
