Kenneth E. Hughes passed away February 25, 2020 at The Life Care Center of Stonegate, Parker, Colorado at the age of 91 years, 1 month, and 2 days. He was born on January 23, 1929 in Strang, NE to Ralph and Mildred (Gewecke) Hughes. Ken attended country schools, Geneva High School, Nebraska Wesleyan College and Wayne State College. He received Master’s degrees from the University of Northern Colorado, and Colorado College. He was employed as a math teacher at Hartington High School, Hartington, NE before being drafted into the Korean War assigned to the 19th Engineer Combat Group of the X Corps. He served his country 2 years and was awarded the Bronze Star. He returned to Hartington High School after the war as a teacher/principal/coach. There he met the cute Home Economics teacher, Twila Riley. They were married June 23, 1957 in Pierce, NE. Ken and Twila moved to Denver, CO where Ken taught math at Hill Jr. High. In 1960 he transferred to Thomas Jefferson High School where he continued his career teaching math and coaching football, basketball and baseball. He is an inductee in the Denver Public Schools Coaches Hall of Fame and the Wayne State College Athletic Hall of Fame. After his retirement in 1987, Ken volunteered as an Assistant Football Coach at Ponderosa High School for 10 seasons, didn’t miss a grandson’s baseball game, was an active member of the Parker United Methodist Church for 51 years and volunteered for many civic activities. He enjoyed gardening and work outdoors. Ken is survived by his wife, Twila; a daughter, Lynn (Tom) Strickland of Englewood, CO; 2 sons, Kurt (Angie) of Parker, CO and Garr (Tracy) of Elizabeth, CO; a brother, Gerald of Hollister, CA; 3 sisters, Genevieve (Jim) Tanner of Valencia, CA, Deloris (Fritz) Murrell of Phoenix, AZ and Sharon (Roger) Cudaback of Exeter, NE; a sister-in-law, Claire (Bob) Hallock of Joplin, MO, a brother-in-law, Tom (JoLee) Riley of Prineville, OR; 7 grandchildren, Lee (Allison Leone) Strickland of Kansas City, MO, Lacey Strickland of Englewood, CO; Riley (Franca Gyermek) Hughes of Parker, CO, Sam Hughes of Aurora, CO, Hannah Hughes of Castle Rock, CO, Jack Hughes of St. Louis, MO; Cole Hughes of Kiowa, CO; 1 great granddaughter, Emilia Hughes of Parker, CO; 30 nieces and nephews; and many friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers, Darrell, Ron and Bob; 2 sisters, Shirley Fowler and Carol Motis; 2 nephews, Doug Hughes and Mike Fowler and a brother-in-law, Bob Hallock In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Parker United Methodist Church, 11805 Pine Drive, Parker, Colorado 80134 or to the National Processing Center, Alzheimer’s Association, PO Box 96011, Washington DC, 20090-6011 (designate for Research Only) Interment at Fort Logan National Cemetery, March 13, 2020 at 10:00 am. Celebration of Life, Parker United Methodist Church, March 14, 2020 at 2:00 pm. Reception following in Church foyer.
