Raymond Joseph Shaw Obituary

MARQUETTE, MI - Raymond Joseph Shaw, age 93, of Marquette, entered eternal life Thursday, February 27, 2020, at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans, in the loving care of his family and caregivers of UP Home Health and Hospice. Born March 13, 1926, in Marquette, Ray was raised in AuTrain and attended Graveraet High School. In March 1946, Ray entered the military, serving in the US Army during World War II. Following his honorable discharge, Ray returned to the area where he was employed on the ore boats. In 1952, Ray began a long career as a clerk in the offices of the Lake Superior and Ishpeming Railroad, a career that spanned 34 years when he retired in 1986. In 1960, Ray met and later married Julia Halverson on December 20, 1968. The couple made their home in Marquette where they raised their family. In his leisure, Ray was an avid collector of everything from stamps, antiques, coins, guilt edge merchandising, single handle moonshine jugs, and anything he found interesting, which was almost everything. He often traveled to different states to sell antiques, often acquiring new ones in the process. His other pleasures included taking saunas in his younger years, playing poker every Thursday night, daily coffee clutches at the Big Boy, in addition to being an excellent storyteller. He was a fan of the old TV shows, enjoyed reading about and discussing local history, and also enjoyed spending time at his woods property. For many years, Ray volunteered at the St. Vincent dePaul Society. Ray attended St. Peter Cathedral. A kind hearted and sweet family man, Ray is survived by his children, Ruth (Grant) McKean of Somerville, NJ, Emily Bartol of Ishpeming, MI, and Barb Vincent of Marquette; grandkids, Lynn Novak, Michael Wessman, Sophie and Elise McKean, Justis, Cheri, and Jessica Bartol; great-grandkids, Amanda, Bethany, Nicole, and Kimberly; several great great-grandkids; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 48 years, Julia; and brothers, Peter Shaw, Ronald Durant, and Cyril Durant. Graveside committal services will be held at the Serenity Pines Cemetery in AuTrain on Friday, May 15, at 1:00 pm. Rev. Msgr. Michael Steber will officiate. Veterans honors will be accorded.
