Cary Sherwin Davis Obituary

Cary (Chuck) Sherwin Davis, 93, a native of Portsmouth, Virginia, went to his heavenly home to be with his Lord on November 4, 2016, in Sebastian, Florida. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Dorothy Skutt Davis; and his two children, Wayne S. Davis (Dianne) and Susan Davis [Montgomery] Coard (John). A graveside service will be held on Thursday, November 10, at 11 AM at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens, followed by a gathering of family and friends at 3009 Kempton Park Rd, Suffolk, VA 23435. He was a family man and loved his family unconditionally. He was a man of strong faith, believing in the power and strength of Jesus Christ’s love and the beauty and peace that would await him after his passing. He served as an elder & a deacon in the Presbyterian Church for many years. He served in the US Army in WWII and was involved in the successful rescue of prisoners of war on Luzon in the Pacific. He retired from NNSY in Portsmouth, Virginia, in 1978 where he worked as a boat builder and planner and estimator. He moved to Blacksburg and then Lexington, Virginia and returned to his home in Portsmouth in 1999. In 2013 he moved to Florida where he lived until his death. He was a Mason for many years and served as a grand master in Blacksburg, Virginia. When he returned to Portsmouth in 1999 he joined the Khedive Shrine clown unit. He enjoyed entertaining the crowds with his skill of riding his small bike backwards in parades. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and he continued to play golf into his mid 80’s, was on a bowling team, and threw horseshoes when he was 83 with a ringer percentage of 67% in a championship tournament. He was a woodworker and made many things with his hands including carvings of birds and fish as well as a solid oak four post cannonball bed. He built two houses in his lifetime, one in Portsmouth and one in Blacksburg. He even enjoyed singing in the choir at Church and also for some years in a Barbershop Quartet. He was loved by many and will be missed greatly.
