It was a joyous occasion in the household of the late Mr. Carlisle Coles and the late Mrs. Mary Fisher Coles on July 22, 1956, upon the arrival of Gwendolyn Denise Coles, the youngest of eleven children. Gwendolyn was born in Portsmouth, Virginia and departed this life quietly and peacefully, on Friday, April 6, 2012, at Gilchrist Center in Towson, Maryland.
Gwendolyn attended public school in Portsmouth, Virginia, and Northampton County, Virginia. In 1975, she graduated from Northampton High School. Her education continued at the Eastern Shore Community College, where she studied Secretarial Science. Gwendolyn joined the U.S. Army in 1982 and attended basic training at Fort Jackson in South Carolina where she received a medical discharge. Later, she earned a degree in Information Technology/Computer Networking at the ITT Tech University in Norfolk, Virginia.
Gwendolyn had one son her Pride & Joy Demetrice Andre Coles, whom she welcomed into this world on December 28, 1976. She had three granddaughters that she truly adored and loved dearly. Gwen was a member of Mount Calvary Baptist in Exmore, Virginia . She was a member of the NAACP, International Free and Accepted Modern Masons, Inc. and Order of the Eastern Star, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Gwendolyn was employed as a Technician at Mack Trucks, Inc. Allentown, Pennsylvania from 2004 to 2012. She served as a machinist for more than 15 years at Colonnaâs Shipyard and Metro Machines Corporation in Norfolk, Virginia and Langston Staley Company in Baltimore, Maryland.
Family and friends affectionately knew Gwendolyn as âGwynnâ. She was a very lovely and outgoing person. Gwendolyn had 1,180 friends on FACEBOOK, and she spent many hours sharing her love and connecting with all of them. She loved to watch the football games, entertain, cook, travel , dance and plan family activities, gatherings and special celebrations.
She was preceded in death by two brothers James Coles and Walter Coles, two sister Virginia Moses and Juanita Stoakley.
She leaves to cherish her memories: her son Demetrice Andre Coles (Tara Turner), Baltimore, Maryland; two brothers, John Coles and Nathaniel Coles (Rochelle), four sisters, Novella James (Robert), Barbara Brickhouse (Samuel), June Staton, Ph.D. (Raymond), and Reverend Alice Coles; three granddaughters, Delani, Shekia, and Demi; three god daughter, Jessisca Edwards of Cheriton, Virginia, Brenda Ann Burton and Lovely Hines Reynolds of Elizabeth City, North Carolina and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends
