Keith Michael Rave Obituary

Keith M. Rave passed away Oct. 3, 2016 with his best friend, Maggie holding his hand at the Hospice House of the Black Hills. A memorial service will be held at 10:00am on Friday, October 7, 2016, at Fountain Springs Church. Keith was born Feb. 2, 1959 in Sioux Falls, SD to Beverly J. and Earl J. Rave. He was the second oldest of five kids. The family moved to Rapid City when he was a baby to try their luck in the beautiful Black Hills. His parents owned the Rimrock Shopping Center, where all the boys worked. Earl and Bev instilled a hard work ethic into their children. Keith spent most of his youth discovering the hills around Johnson Siding hunting, fishing, riding motorcycles, and giving his parents gray hair. Keith attended Big Bend Country School. After graduating from Stevens High School in 1977, Keith joined the family trade and built homes with his father, Earl, and his brothers. Sixteen years ago, Keith began his favorite journey of all. Logan Earl Rave was born making Keith a father. Four years later, Lexus Elizabeth Rave came into this world and completed Keith's dream of having a family. Keith loved his children in a monumental way. He was a very attentive dad. He played with them, nurtured them and instilled all of his best qualities. Their family liked to go camping with friends, watch sprint car races, boating at Pactola, mountain biking on M Hill, and skiing at Terry Peak. Keith was a master craftsman. His finish carpentry skills were second to none. His curved stair cases are pieces of art. Recently, he received a patent for one of his furniture designs. He also tried his hand at building outhouses - he called it the Backyard Biffy. Being creative was Keith's gift. A few more things about Keith: He would go out of his way to help a friend. He once said, "someone needs to be the one that talks, and someone needs to be the one to listen." Keith was a listener, and an attentive one. He had a wonderful sense of humor, and loved to make his friends and family laugh. Keith loved to party with his friends and have a good time. He would work a room like he was running for office. Keith had a bucket list labeled, "Before I Turn 60". I encourage his family members and friends to complete as many items on this list in his memory: Stomp out cancer, get a concealed weapons permit, attend the Rochford Church, settle into a home, bike or hike the Centennial Trail, go to an Alan Jackson Concert, buy a car at Barrett Jackson, volunteer with the Special Olympics, farm with Uncle Eddie, golf with Uncle Clarence, take golf lessons, Hot Rod Yeller, see Joel Osteen, and party with Willie Nelson. His Father, Earl J Rave preceded him in death. The family finds great comfort in them being together again. Keith's surviving family include: his children, Logan and Lexi Rave; his girlfriend/best friend, Maggie Messerli, and her kids Claire, Emma and Liam Porter; his mother, Beverly J Rave; brothers, Steve & Linda Rave, Darrell & Kim Rave, Kelly & Gail Rave, and his sister Nanette and her husband Sheldon Oukrop. Nieces and Nephews: Nick, Taryn, Devon, Miranda, Taylor, Zach, Eric, Miles, and Kelcey. Great nephew Landon and nieces Jensyn and Auburn. Keith loved his Mergen and Rave aunts, uncles and cousins. Keith leaves too many friends to count. He loved them so much most could be considered family members too. He too was loved by many, especially of course his family and will be deeply missed by all. We would like to thank everyone who contributed to Keith's Gofundme campaign, the Black Hills Home Builder's benefit, and the benefit created by his siblings. A memorial has been established. Cards may be sent to Beverly Rave, 4303 Fleetwood Dr, Black Hawk, SD 57718.
