She was raised on the family farm in Nora Springs, Iowa. During her high school years, Judy was active in basketball, was the editor for her school newspaper, and was a twirler and drum majorette for her school band. She graduated from Nora Springs High School in 1957 and attended Iowa State’s teaching college graduating with honors in 1961. She accepted her first teaching position in Eagle Grove, Iowa. Judy married Kenneth Shaw on June 17, 1962, and born to this union were two sons, Curtis Lyle Shaw and Dennis Edward Shaw. They made their home in Eagle Grove until Ken’s position with Fareway took them to new communities throughout Iowa, developing lifelong friendships along the way. She moved to Winterset in 2016 where she resided until her death. Judy was a member of the United Church of Christ in Creston and was active in several community clubs and organizations. She worked for Creston Community School District. Judy had a passion for traveling and took many trips with her sister around the world. She collected porcelain dolls, enjoyed shopping, riding lazy rivers, video poker, playing bridge with friends, and decorating her home for Christmas. She was a big fan of Duke, North Carolina, and Gonzaga basketball and followed them each season while checking her college brackets during March Madness. She was also her grandchildren's biggest supporter, whether it was on the softball or baseball diamond, football field, basketball court, wrestling mat, trap shoot, or track and field sideline. Judy’s love for life was apparent in all that she did. Her dedication to her family and friends throughout the years was immeasurable. Her gentle guidance, love, and grace was a guiding light that will continue to shine until we meet again. Julia was preceded in death by her husband Ken and parents Lyle and Catherine Pedelty. She is survived by her sons, Dennis (wife Kim) of Winterset and Curtis (wife Lisa) of Adel, grandchildren Kendra, Kaden, Josef, and Taylor, sister, Harriett (Lee) Kopper, and her faithful furry companion, Jarvin.
