Violet Ann (Bicanich) Matsen Obituary

A private graveside service will be held at a later date in Chisholm Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Rupp Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Chisholm. Violet Ann (Bicanich) Matsen, 95, died at Cornerstone Villa in Buhl, MN, on April 16, 2016. She was born on January 2, 1921, in Hibbing, MN, to Steve Sr. and Kate (Lisac) Bicanich. Violet graduated from Chisholm High School and was a lifelong Chisholm resident. She was united in marriage to Howard W. Matsen at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Chisholm on November 24, 1945. Violet participated in various capacities as a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, the National Catholic Society of Foresters, Council of Catholic Women, American All-Slav Association of Minnesota, Club 9, 55 Plus Club and Chisholm Senior Citizen Center. Over the years, she enjoyed volleyball, bocce and bowling, as well as having a love of polka dancing and the waltz. Violet is survived by her son, James Darwin Matsen of Medellin, Columbia; granddaughters, Leah (Brandon) Michaelis of Paynesville, MN, and Brie Matsen of Port Jervis, NY; two great grandchildren; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Howard W. (August 19, 1991); son, Mark Patrick Matsen (January 26, 2016); brothers, Frank, Steve and Joe; sisters, Katherine, Mary and Angeline; infant brother, Stephen and infant sister, Marija.
