Henry Ramirez Daley Obituary

Henry Ramirez Daley (Popeye) went to rest on February 13, 2020 after a long battle with Non Hodgkins Lymphoma. Henry was born on August 7, 1933 in Phoenix AZ to Henry and Cecelia Daley. He was preceded in death by his wife Velia Sotelo Daley. He is survived by his 2 sons, Edward Daley (Manie), and Richard Daley (Suzy). And 2 beautiful granddaughters that he absolutely adored, Sierra Lovato- Daley and Selena Rose Daley. Henry grew up in Phoenix on 9th street and had many friends who eventually became lifelong friends. A few months before his 13th birthday, in the summer of 1946, and without his father’s permission, he and a handful of friends made their way to Utah to work in the fields. The plan was to get rich, but unfortunately it did not work out so well for them. Upon his return from Utah not all his decisions where well received by his father. So, at the age of 16, in April of 1950 he joined the Army. This time with his father’s encouragement. He served in the Army for 4 years, was a member of the Wolfhounds, and saw active duty as a Corporal in the Korean War. He learned honor, patience and discipline in the Army, which paved the way for the rest of his life. In 1954 he returned home and eventually started his career with Valley National Bank. In 1955 he married his childhood sweetheart, Velia, and they were inseparable until her death in 2003. As a loan officer with Valley National Bank, he helped many people with loans, when others would not. He wanted them to have the same opportunities as he did to succeed. There are numerous stories that people have shared with us over time on how he loaned them the money for their first car, college, starting a business or a home mortgage. And they were forever grateful to him. Henry retired from Valley National Bank after 39 years of service in 1993. He was the oldest of 6 children and leaves behind brothers Richard Daley (Lucie), Robert Daley, David Daley (Mandy) and 2 sisters, Verna Rodriguez, Flora Daley and many cousins, nieces and nephews. In his retirement years he served in many capacities with the American Legion, for both Post 41 and District 12. He enjoyed watching CNN news, sports and of course an ice-cold beverage. Everyone admired Popeye, he was a sharp dresser always sporting the latest styles and loved a new suit!! And after a handshake, hug or kiss from him you always came away from him with the most amazing smell of cologne. He often reminisced about his wonderful summers in Northern Arizona on his Uncle’s ranch. A gentle soul, he was always ready to lend a helping hand and did his best to makes everyone he met a better person. A lover of Early Jazz Music, his favorites, Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald. We would often catch him humming along to his favorite songs. Always tapping his toes and snapping his fingers.
