Verna Mae Buchanan, 96, Reeds, Missouri, passed away Thursday evening, February 13, 2020 at Carthage Health & Rehab, Carthage, Missouri. Verna Mae was born July 15, 1923 in Carthage to the late Vernie and Jestina (Henry) Williams. She was a 1941 graduate of Carthage High School. Verna Mae married Charles Wallace (Cotton) Buchanan on October 2, 1942 in Carthage. They were able to celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary before he passed away September 9, 2008. Verna Mae was a homemaker and also worked with her husband on their farm raising cattle. She was an accomplished seamstress, an excellent gardener, and she enjoyed spending time in the pasture checking her cows. She observed nature, and the seasons, and watched for the early spring flowers in the timber each year. Her gentle spirit and giving heart were evident as she served and loved her family well. Verna Mae had walked with Jesus since she was a young girl, and she was a member of Avilla Baptist Church in Avilla, Missouri. Survivors include one son, Bill Buchanan, and his wife Melfin, Reeds: three grandchildren, Jeremy Buchanan, Amy Henry and husband Chuck Henry, and Sarah Buchanan and husband Scott Johnson; eight great-grandchildren, Nathan Henry and wife Sadie, Noah Henry and wife Becca, Elijah Henry, Ezekiel Henry, Micah Henry, Shiloh Henry, Brayden Johnson, and Cole Johnson; and many extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by a sister Margie Williams who died in childhood, a sister JoAnn Farris, and a brother Wayne Williams. Funeral services will be held 10 am, Monday, February 17, 2020 at Knell Mortuary, Carthage. The family will receive friends from 9 am until service time. Interment will follow at Williams Cemetery, Avilla. Memorial gifts are suggested to the Avilla Baptist Church Missionary Fund in care of Knell Mortuary.
