Richard "Dick" Coughlin

Richard "Dick" Coughlin, age 76 of Hastings, died suddenly but peacefully at home on Thursday morning, February 13, 2020. Richard James III, the son of Richard J. II and Elizabeth (Benton) Coughlin, the fist child born in 1944 in North Dakota, was born on January 1, 1944 in Minot. Dick graduated from Williston High School with the class of 1962, and shortly thereafter married his high school sweet heart, Virginia Delaney, on January 28, 1963, in Spokane, Washington. Dick enlisted in the United States Army and was later granted an Honorable Discharge. Dick then graduated from Bozeman College with a degree in engineering, and began working at Universal Oil Products in Chicago. In 1970, he accepted a job at Koch Refinery, now Flint Hills, where he worked until his recent retirement. Dick loved boating on the St. Croix, golfing, and was an excellent woodworker. He had a big love for animals, especially his cats, Willis James and Dolly. Above all, Dick was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather, and cherished the time spent as a family. He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Kathy (Lynn) Borcher and Tom Coughlin. Dick is survived by his wife 57 years, Virginia; children, Jenny Coughlin (John Tangen), Jim Coughlin, and Holly (Rich) Lee; two grandsons, Asa and Neko Lee; siblings, Mike (Kathy) Coughlin, Pat (Ruth) Coughlin, Tim (Corrine) Coughlin, Bob Coughlin, Bill (Stacy) Coughlin, and Barry (Michele) Coughlin; sisters-in-law, Gail Coughlin and Joanne (Chris) Johansen; his beloved cats, Willis James and Dolly; and by many other relatives and friends. In keeping with Dick's requests, a private memorial will be held at a later date. Dick's family requests memorials be given to Animal Folks in his memory. Arrangements are being completed by Starkson Family Life Celebration Chapel of Hastings.
