Melvin Layvet McMillan Jacksonville, Florida Obituary

Melvin Layvet McMillan

Melvin Layvet McMillan, Sr. was born in River Jimetin (Gadsen County), Florida on May 8, 1937 to the late Averitt Donald McMillan and Katie Lee Smith-McMillan. However, Melvin was raised by his grandmother, Alice Robinson-McMillan. Growing up in her household was a very religious environment with respect for the Sabbath getting training in Sunday School and church on Sunday. Wherever he lived, he had a church home which included, Elizabeth A.M.E in River Jimetin, Greater Bethel A.M.E, and St. Paul A.M.E. Church in Jacksonville, Florida. After living in Miami for several years they moved to Jacksonville, Florida where his grandmother established a permanent resident at 1157 West 10th Street for all her children to call home. Melvin graduated from New Stanton Senior High School in Duval County and enlisted in the United States Air Force upon graduation. The experience in the military afforded him the opportunity to become a wiser, more disciplined man of strong character and values. After returning to Jacksonville, Florida from the military, he met the love of his life, Betty. To this union were formed three children whom he loved dearly. He took seriously his fatherly responsibilities. He was a father that showed us that love is patience and sacrifice, laughter and advice. His love was done by leading by example with strong but gentle hands and a good heart. He was affectionately known as “Big Melvin” after his first child, Melvin Jr was born. Melvin worked hard to provide for his family unselfishly. He spent over 20 years working for Winn Dixie Grocery Stores. He also worked for Greyhound Dog Track for over 20 years until retirement. On Friday, February 14, 2020 God called Melvin to his eternal rest. Melvin was preceded in death by his first born, Melvin Jr. He is survived by his loyal loving son, Donald Avertt McMillan and his devoted loving daughter, Valencia Cherie McMillan; brothers, Ronald McMillan, Tyrone Simmons, Carl Simmons, and James Butler; sisters, Bettye McMillan-Cantrell, Caddie Simmons Timmons, and Audrey Brown; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends.
