Holland Clark Capper Obituary

After a fall from a tree, Cap suffered a fatal heart attack. Surviving family include his wife, Beatriz Milleur Capper; his sister, Mary Stewart; children, Jean Marie Capper (Walter Heinichen), Holland C. Capper II (Martha), Lizanne Campbell (Malcolm); grandchildren, Elizabeth Igoe, Philip Igoe, Michael Igoe, Michael Capper, Ben Capper, Lara Whyte, Christina Campbell, Dylan Campbell, and great grandchildren, Cora Campbell, Peter Davidson, and Ava Davidson.

Cap was born in Manistee to Holland Perry and Thelma Capper and lived there until attending the University of Colorado where he met the mother of his children, Elizabeth. After marrying and serving 4 years in the Navy he earned a law degree from Harvard University in 1960. He practiced law in Chicago until his retirement in 2001.

His first love was for his ponies and horses, followed by a passion for skiing beginning at the age of about 14 lasting until the end of the 2017 season. His yacht racing career led him to do 46 races from Chicago to Mackinac Island with 4 wins in his section and one miss by 3 seconds of an overall trophy. In Manistee High School he took and processed the photos for his year book. He kept his own dark room for many years. An unexpected Christmas present led him to take up oil painting and his terrific sense of color shows in his works. Another lifelong hobby was furniture making both from kits and his own designs.

Cap loved his family and passed on to them his love of skiing and sailing along with his competitive spirit and determination.

Circa 1963 “ Jean Marie, if you aren’t falling, you’re not learning”
