Nadine Smith

Nadine R. Smith, age 83, passed away on Saturday, February 1, 2020, at the Hubbard Care Center in Hubbard, IA. Nadine was born November 9, 1936 near Radcliffe, IA, the daughter of Edward and Pearl (Sievert) Nassen. She attended Pleasant Township #7 Country School and later attended New Providence High School, graduating in 1954. Nadine was a standout basketball player at NPHS and set the school record with 2125 points. She also earned the prestigious Amsberry Trophy which was awarded annually to the outstanding female player in the Pine Lake Conference. She was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart, Dean Smith, on July 16, 1954 at the First Baptist Church in Eldora. She was employed at the Hardin County Treasurer’s office in Eldora prior to working at Hardin County Mutual Insurance in New Providence and later Iowa Falls. Nadine retired in 1998 and began travelling with her husband Dean to such places as the Pacific Northwest, the East Coast and Nova Scotia. The couple also volunteered at the Community Breakfast in New Providence. She was a member of the Honey Creek New Providence Friends Church. She is survived by her husband Dean and daughter Toni (Kevin) Memmel of Palatine, IL, and granddaughter Jennifer Wurch of San Diego, CA. In addition, she has two step grandchildren Jessica Memmel and Jillian (William) Brown and great-grandson Marshall of Madison, WI. Nadine was preceded in death by her daughter Becky in 1998, as well as her parents Edward and Pearl, and brother Carlton Nassen. Memorials may be directed to the family.
