Cumberland—Clarence Elwood Sheetz, 96, of Cumberland, passed away on Tuesday, January 28, 2020, at home surrounded by his family. Born in Cumberland, MD, on December 10, 1923, he was the son of the late George F. and Mary Edna Pearl (Kyne) Sheetz. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn (Irons) Sheetz; son-in-law, Larry Twigg; brothers, George, Elmer, and Donald Sheetz; sisters, Evelyn Sheetz, Kathryn Plummer, Mary Skelly, Vada Mantheiy, and S. Jean Brant; niece, Marianne Manning; nephews, John Mantheiy, Donald Plummer, and G. Richard Sheetz. Clarence was employed at the B&O Railroad where he worked as a machinist. He retired from that position in 1980. He was a graduate of Fort Hill High School. Following high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy where he served his country during World War II. Clarence was an active member of Davis Memorial United Methodist Church, a member of the Queen City Lodge 131 AF and AM, Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, the Order of the Eastern Star McKinley Chapter 12, and the National Association of Retired Veteran Railway Employees. Clarence is survived by his daughters, Brenda Twigg, and Karen Hernandez and husband Al; grandchildren, Larenda Twigg, Ryan Twigg and wife Helena, and Andrew Hernandez; great grandchildren, Natalie and Logan Twigg. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and cousins. Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland on Friday, January 31, 2020 from 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. The members of Queen City Lodge will conduct their memorial service on Friday at 7 P.M. at the funeral home. The funeral services will be conducted at the Davis Memorial United Methodist Church on Saturday, February 1, 2020 at 11 A.M. Friends will be received at the church one hour prior to the funeral service. Burial will be in Davis Memorial Cemetery with military honors accorded by Ft. Cumberland Post 13 Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Clarence’s memory may do so by making contributions to the Western Maryland Health Systems Hospice Services, 1050 Industrial Blvd., Suite 19, Cumberland, MD 21502.
