Sherri Jo Hancock

Sherri Jo Hancock, 43, of Bassett, VA passed away on Friday, August 1, 2014 at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County. Ms. Hancock was born on June 9, 1971 in Martinsville, VA to Kenneth “Kenny” William Hancock of Ridgeway, VA and Mary Stephens Gilley of the residence. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, James and Lois Stephens, paternal grandparents, Bill and Rachel Hancock. Sherri graduated from Bassett High School. She was of the Baptist faith. Sherri battled her illness with strength and courage, her smile never left her face. She gave of herself freely never expecting anything in return and was loved by everyone that knew her. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her step-father, Anthony Byron “Tony” Gilley of the residence; step-sister, Melissa Chitwood of Martinsville; step-brother, Anthony Byron Gilley, Jr. of Bassett; very special aunt, Ann Ray of Bassett; nephew, Quentin Colsson of Bassett; special friend Debbie Meurs, many special aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. The funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 5, 2014 at Norris Funeral Services Martinsville Chapel with Pastor Charles Waller officiating. Entombment will be at the Roselawn Abbey, Martinsville, VA. Visitation will be Monday, August 4, 2014 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home and other times at the residence 1192 Jarrett Drive, Bassett, VA 24055. Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, P.O. Box 1000, Department 142, Memphis, TN 38101.
