Shirley Cornelis, age 86 of Boone, died January 25, 2020 at the Westhaven Community. A Funeral Mass will be Tuesday, January 28, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of the Sacred Heart, with Rev. Ross Caniglia officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. Shirley Mae (Shoemaker) Cornelis, was born in Marshall, Minnesota on October 5, 1933, the daughter of Arnold and Edna (Qunnel) Shoemaker. The family moved many times during her childhood. Her parents divorced and her mother, Edna, remarried Louis Bossi, and Shirley lived with them in Momence, Illinois. She graduated from High School in Momence, in 1952. In 1954, Shirley married Don Hebert in Chicago Heights, Illinois and a son James was born. In 1961, the couple divorced. She moved to Atkins, Iowa to live with her father and stepmother, Evelyn where she worked at Collins Areospace in Cedar Rapids and was a waitress in Atkins. On August 10, 1963, Shirley was united in marriage to Leon Cornelis in Belle Plaine, Iowa and they soon moved to Nevada, Iowa to be closer to Leon’s work at the D.O.T. in Ames. They moved to Boone in 1965. James was adopted by Leon and Michael was born in 1966 and Robert in 1968. A homemaker first, Shirley worked at the Boone County Shopping news in early years, but loved staying at home raising her sons. She enjoyed cooking and baking for her family. Shirley had a talent for decorating, sewing, making elaborate quilts, drapes, making afghans, throw rugs, and crocheting doilies. She also enjoyed collecting rocks, refurbishing furniture, and attending her sons and grandchildren’s school and sporting events. Besides her Church, Shirley was a member of the Altar Society and was a long-time participant in Faith Sharing Groups. She is preceded in death by her parents. Shirley is survived by her husband, Leon of Boone; three sons, Jim Cornelis of Ames, Mike (Jill) Cornelis and Rob (JoAnn) Cornelis all of Boone; a brother, Robert Bossi of Momence, Illinois; three sisters, Betty (Larry) Birch of Ottumwa, Patti (Paul) Marcotte of Bourbonnais, Illinois and Bonnie (Vern) Wehrman of Grant Park, Illinois; six grandchildren, Sarah, Ryan, Jacy, Joey, Clay, and Maggie; a great-grandson, Ezra. Friends may call at the Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall, on Monday from 4 until 8 p.m., where the family will be present from 6 until 8 p.m. and a Vigil Service will be at 7 p.m. On Tuesday, friends may call at the Church from 9:30 a.m. until service time. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family. The Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall, is in charge of the arrangements.
